Heya Guys,

I bought BMW 318i last month and that car is still with my mechanic apparently it seems like he couldn't solve the overheating problem when I drive for 20min it just goes on the RED and when I switch on the heater it comes back to the middle and its perfectly fine, what my mechanic did he REPLECED THE FOLLOWING:

1: Cylinder Head
2: Thermostat
3: Radiator
4: Water Pump
5: Radiator Fan

Now I couldn't figure it out why its stil heating up please do help me solving this puzzle. Many Thanks

I wonder if it would have to do something with your car heater. Maybe something is blocking the rad fluid where it goes through your heating coil. But when you turn your fan to hot and blow air out, it alows the coolant to flow through, but when its on cold it somehow blocks the coolant. I dont know, its just a guess, and probubly not even a good one, but meh, i tryed. lol.

It's nothing to do with the heater but we need more information.............year, model, [E30, E36, etc...]

I was cerious. My Car is a 1985 318i. I noticed it runs a bit hot not to bad. The needle stays a bit past the middle line. The Previous owner told me it has always run a little warm and he's owned it for about 18 years. I hope it's nothing I should have to worry about. He did tell me it over heated once in a 95 degree summer day. he got the Radiator replaced and it's less than a year old now and it hasn't over heated on me but I notice it does run a bit hotter than any of the other cars I've owned in the past.

Is this a known problem for this modle? Or is it nothing I should worry about?

"Hey Joe" The most common problems with your model are Radiator [done], Fan Clutch, Thermostat and Temp. Gauge Fluctuations caused by loose cluster screws or boards in the cluster itself.

"summersjss" your car has a later engine [M42] as opposed to the '85's M20 engine. Most of the above applies with the exception of the gauge problem and the addition [for simplicties sake] a seal at the front of the head gasket. Loosing any coolant??

"mistervelasco" keep trying, this forum's like that sometimes.

Most people I know Bought their bmw as their hobby car. Picked one up for a good price and just work on it and drive it through the summer and store it through the winter. I have to say just in the week I've owned my Bimmer I've learned more about cars than I ever had before. It's a hobby like all hobbies it's expensive. But I personally wouldn't recomend a BMW to someone as their first mode of Transportation unless they have a lot of money or are a mechanic. Even the new ones seem to have problems starting in the winter around here.

Here here, there's plenty of space in our "boat". I bought mine for nothing, and my best friend, who sold it to me (who's not inclined like the chap above) supports the fact that 318is are pretty straight forward, these mid-80er mods.
I have a summer beater, and the bimmer is a sporty car for fun at the right price :dunno: seems logical. If your'e filthy fn packed with cash and you never would change your own oil, there's a different forum available, for sure. Us udder guys be trying to make something fun and educating out of an opportunity.
Hope the overheating prob is resolved! that goes for Hey Joe or mistervalesco
