996 6 speed transmission problem

I recently purchased a used 1999 911 Carrera with the 6 speed manual transmission with 75k miles. Occasionally, when cold the transmission will slip out of first gear when initially engaging. Also there is an odd rattling noise coming from the transmission. My mechanic says it will be expensive to pull the transmission and "open it up" to see what the problem may be. Anyone have any suggestions as to what the cause may be? And how expensive to fix it?

Are you sure its in the Transmission? and not the clutch!

Tom - My 2000 996 has 75K miles. Just found out that Porsche doesn't sell parts. My only option is to replace entire transmission. Before you pay for "open it up" I would confirm that there are options for parts replacement.

Let me clarify. My symptoms do not match yours. I had "whooping" noise from rear most noticeable near 35mph. Diagnosis is transmission problem. Was just informed that Porsche recently stopped selling parts for transmission. Must purchase rebuilt unit.

Is the noise when u engage the cluth only could be the release bearing going bad. Does the noise stop once the car is moving. if it does still might be the release bearing. Oh anytime u work on a porsche no matter what its costly. But I love them.
