2001 350 rpms jump 300 repeatedly

I have a 2001 350, where I will be driving along and the rpms will jump up 2-300 rpms and then back down. sometimes it doesn't happen much, but took a 600 mile trip on saturday, and it did it almost constistantly. Sometimes when it jumps, before it could come down it jumps again, going up around 600 or so. does anyone have any ideas?

ok, I'm guessing there was a typo in that? and that you either ment you have a 2001 3500(one ton) or that you have a 360ci engine(5.9L)
either way, my guess would be that your TPS needs replaced. TPS stands for Throttle Position Sensor. it's located on the drivers side of the throttle body. it's job is to tell the computer how much throttle you are giving it(how far open the throttle blades are).
basically, the TPS sends a voltage signal to the computer, as you depress the pedal and open the throttle, the signal voltage goes up. when the TPS goes bad, the signal drops off or spikes instead of going up smoothly. also, the drops and spikes can happen when you are trying to hold a steady speed(cruise set).
the drops and spikes in signal voltage makes the computer "think" you have either let off of or gotten on the throttle. in either case, when that happens, the computer unlocks the torqueconvertor. when the torque convertor unlocks, the RPM jumps.

it has some good information about how to check the TPS to see if it is indeed the problem.
like I said, the TPS would be the first thing that I'd check, it's easy to change, and is only $25 at the parts store, if you have to get it at a dealership, it's about $40 to $50.
