Im about to get my first car since i get my license in a few months, i was considering a mk2 toyota mr2. After hearing about its handeling and cons i decided it wouldnt be right for my first car. Now im considering either a 95 240sx or a 91-93 300zx N/A. Im not a noob so please dont give me some noob anwser, but which car do you thing is better. Im not intrested in drifiting, im going for all around perforamnce but more so in the speed area. For which ever car i get im planning on not touching the engine at first, im only gona do upgrades such as suspension, swaybars, struts and things like that. A year or so after that when i have built my driving skill up, i plan on swapping a jdm motor in. Either the sr20 into the 240 or the twin turbo engine into the 300. So what car do you think would be better in my situation, also im wondering how do most people think there 300zx handel?

umm, if you want speed with no engine mods, defenitely don't get the 240. pretty slow stock, at least compared to the z32. the z32 will be more expensive insurance wise, cost of car wise, and maintenence wise. it is a sports car and what comes with a sports car comes with the z32, higher price, not that practical, put will put a smile on your face. on the other hand, the 240sx is more of a "family car", cheaper, but isn't as fun. depends on what you want.

pretty much what Jared said.
Z's are kinda expensive to mod and maintain. And assuming you are still in school.....you might want to get something more practical if you are tight on cash.
Z's are great, but they are even better when you are able to enjoy them and do what you want (mods, etc.) with them. I learned that the hard way when I bought my Z. I'm always short on cash and my Z suffers. :frown: Notice my Z is not pictured in my sig.....yeah, she's dead in a garage at my mom's house till I can get some money (or win the lottery).

240sx just server an economy purpose. Go with the s13 or s14 and you'll be good to go.

Well asked question dude... I cant stand it when people come in here "yo is da 30z tt a gud carr fo drftin or 2sumthin lik dat?"

Anyways, you've got the right idea... If you get a 300ZedX, I wouldn't recommend touching the engine too much, maybe a cone filter just to get a little bit more nut.

Mild horsepower, and a very stiff suspension setup, goes for a very fun vehicle.

The Zed32, Twin Turbo or not, has plenty of horsepower, esspecially for a new driver. I can vouche for that :D

But I like your idea... And it should work out for you.

well if your planning of doing a swap already maybe the N/A is not the car for you. its gonna be more expensive to do the swap. if i was you i would save up a little more and buy the tt. that would save you time and money.

Why is maintenence so much on a 300zx? Do things break down more often on a 300zx then most other nissans?

I really wouldnt recommend getting a 300zx for your first car. I too was going to get one for my first car, that or a toyota supra...then i started thinking about it, and realized it would be better to wait till your older.

There are things you have to consider...first of all is insurance, its going to be a lot. Since your getting your license soon that means your in high school, and unless someone else is paying for your insurance...its going to be very hard to pay for it.

Your in high school...duh...why the hell do you want a 300zx? To look cool? Sure, it will make you look super cool, but will also be a waste. Im sure you go out a lot with friends right? Well, your only going to be able to drive 1 of them around. Also, a sports car like a 300zx is not going to serve its purpose when all your doing is driving it to school everyday.

And if you think your gonna street race with it, then good luck. I hope you dont die. Teenagers are stupid when they have fast cars. (not saying you are, but your peers may be) If you want to race it, take it to the track where people are smart about it.

The 300zx is really not a good choice for a first car. I love them, and dont take this post the wrong way, im just trying to give some advice and my opinion. I think you should go with the 240, its a lot more reasonable for someone of your age (and mine too). If its power you want, then check out the WRX or GTI. Both have turbos and give out over 200hp. Your insurance will be lower and you will have a lot more room while still remaning sporty. Civics and Jettas are good for first cars too, but i dont like them...they are weak. ;]

My first car was an R32 GTR :P
My second was a 300zx NA
Boy the trouble i did get in back in the late 80's and early 90's with that baby!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
but yea if ur going to get a first car you could get a 300zx but i wouldent reccomend it because
(A) petrol is expensive and it guzzles it like a mothaf**ker
(B) Insurance is f**king expensive
(C) Parts can be a bitch because they do run you a good deal of money atleasst where i come from
(D) Its not easy to bang a womans in the backseat!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I would recomend it because

(A) Chicks dig the ZED!
(B) Its a cheap supercar!
(C) The targa tops are f**kin awsome fun!
(D) You will anhilate all the decal clad civics!
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Just my two cents!

Well I cant say much for a first car other than make sure you have the money to keep it on the road. My first auto was a '66 Impalla 4dr with a 454 engine swap, so I have gone through my BIG power days now I am in my first mid-life crises and only 27. lol But it will be expensive, and the worst thing is waiting for parts when something does go wrong. Luckly I do most of my own work so I cut out alot of the cost, but to give you an example, my front brakes job, minus labor cost me, 24.99 per rotor, 46.99 for pads and shims, and 2.50 for brake cleaner. It took me about 2 hours to do my brakes at a slow pace but I was also checking everything else out. This was a total of 74.00 dollars (US) est. Now the estimate from a brake shop was 300.00!!!! But either way it cost me 45.00 to do my front brakes on my ZX2 Escort, thats a HUGE jump in price and it took 4 days to get the rotors and pads in. So just a warning, I love the car but I am also about 11 years older than you and have about 6 years of automotive wrench time. Be prepaired to pay some money for what you want and need to keep the Z happy.
