I have coolant leaking out of my weep hole and need to replace the water pump. Is this something I can do myself or is it too big of a job?

The hardest part for me was removing the fan shroud. What need to be done is to remove it and lift them together, shroud and fan assembly.

do you have a 6 or an 8? It's not that hard, just keep track of your bolts and parts. If you haven't done much r&r work before, use ziploc bags and label them, helps a ton.

Do you have a 4.0 or a 5.2 I just did my 5.2 for the second time. The first one had a bad shaft. Like the other post the fan and the shroud are kind of Tricky. Fan unscrews onthe 5.2 counterclockwise toward the passenger side.

I am trying to replace the water pump on a 94 with a 4L engine.
The Hayes' Grand Cherokee book includes only the V8.
How do I remove the fan ? There seems to be a straight shaft
to the fan clutch, without a hex bolt like the V8. Please help !
Thanks.

Thanks, but the jeepin.com's example had an electric fan.
My situation is having a fan/clutch bolted to the pulley that is
mounted to the water pump fly-wheel. I had the shroud loosened
but don't what else to separate the fan/clutch from the water pump!

Any suggestion please ! Thanks in advance !

hi
im having the same problem and the guy at cdn tire says its the water pump. is there a way to seal this without having to change the pump? with xmas coming i dont have the $$ to drop on repairs right now.

also, ive been ripped off before at crappy tire...is there a way to verify that it actuallly needs a new water pump?
thanks

If it is leaking out the weep hole the pump is bad. You can try a conditioner and sealer for water pumps sometimes they work for a while. With winter comming you would not want to have it go out in a snow.

With all the good helps, I had replaced the water pump on my 4.0L (6 Cyl). The water pump costed $39.
It took me almost 3 hours (since not working on vehicle too often)
It is very tricky to take the fan & shroud out together. Before getting to this point:

- Remove the four bolts on the water pump pulley. If there is rust, spray "Nut & Bolt Blaster" gently beteen the water pump pulley and the bottom of the fan mounting plate.
Separate the fan assembly (Mounting base plate / shaft / clutch) from the pulley all together as one piece.

- Work your way up with the fan assembly and shroud together, careful: tricky & be patient ... sharp fan blades.

- Loosen the belt, at the idler pulley. This is also very tricky later on to put the belt back on.
- Watchout the instruction on Hayes Manual on swing out the Power Steering Pump. The Book is ALL WRONG. Removing the two bolts will ONLY loosen up the power steering pump. There are more bolts to remove before you can take out the steering pump. In my case, it is NOT necessary.

- After the belt is loosen and before removing, it is a good idea to draw a picture of how to route the belt back on.

- Grab the pulley and take it out away from the water pump. If you have rust between the pulley and the 4 bolts, you may need to spray it with "Nut & Bolt BLASTER" and wait for 15 minutes +.

- Remove the water pump bolts and note the locations for the longer bolt an the shorter bolts.

- Remove the feeder to the heater core from the water pump.

- Remove the lower radiator hose from the water pump.

- Jiggle the upper half of the water pump out by shifting the power steering pump to the right.

- Then jiggle out the lower half of the water pump by shifting the power steering pump to the left.

- Take out the four pulley mounting bolts (threads on both ends except the mid-section) and install on your new pump.

- Reverse the step above to install the new pump.

- Replace a new belt is recommended. You have to go through the same or similar pain when it is broken later on.

- You also need to adjust two bolts on the power steering pump assembly to set the tensions on the belt to re-route the belt, new or old.

- If you feel this is too much and if the mechanic's price is right, let him/her to do it.

But I feel so great after I did it myself.
Thank you to everyone here at the forums.

Hi guys. I know this is an old thread but I'm in this boat right now and thought I'd pipe in.
My water pump main bearing failed and I believe the cause is due to worn motor mounts. The extra movement of the engine allowed the fan to rub on the shroud, and place extra stress on the pump bearing. When the pump failed, it was a show.
The new pump is in, and it went well. I use Ultra Copper on the gasket, and torqued the bolts to 22 ft lbs. I also replaced the thermostat as well. The theromostat housing upper bolt is now a discontinued item at the dealer.
Motor mounts are next. I'm not going to subject a new water pump to an engine moving around.
Thought I'd marry those two issues together because I think they are related.

Fairly easy job for the average do-it yourselfer. As I read above the hardest thing I had a problem with was I could not get the fan to come off and ended up taking water pump and fan shroud off together. Not so much a problem getting off but can be a headache getting it back on. Need to hold the pump in place till you get a couple bolts started and fan shroud makes it a little difficult, especially for a person that may have big hands. Thankfully I have very small hands.

The fan on my jeep came off with very little trouble. I initially used two wrenches - one holding the fan still and the other removing the nuts - then I used a hand file to hold the fan still.
I installed the water pump without the fan, then installed the power steering and then the belt. Then the fan and shroud went in with next to no trouble. Fan took a bit of time in tightening all the nuts. Wish I had those newfangled ratcheting box end wrenches...
