Rebuilt vs Used Transfer Case?artrageous 09-30-2004, 10:26 PM I need to get back in touch with the small dealership where I bought the 95 Jeep. (Just got it out of the OTHER shop yesterday where they fixed some of the recall work they screwed up a couple of weeks ago!!) Last time we talked, the guy at the small dealership was willing to split the cost of a transfer case with me (due to bad VC in the current one). He's talking about finding a used one and I'd prefer a rebuilt because... Rebuilt--should be fixed. Used--might not be broken just YET! $$$ is tight--understatement--but even if he'd be willing to cover half of the cost of a used one and apply that *towards* what I'd have to pay for a rebuilt one, I think I'd feel better about it. I think we'd be splitting labor costs, too. What do you think? curbside 10-01-2004, 09:17 AM He's talking about finding a used one and I'd prefer a rebuilt because... Rebuilt--should be fixed. I think your approach is quite practical.... keep in mind that your dealer is probably able to swing a better deal for himself in this situation by obtaining a used transfer case from a salvage yard, as opposed to purchasing a rebuilt one. So, he obviously would do a little better going his preferred route. IMHO, I'd want a bona fide rebuilt case with a warranty. If you can agree to that, and your comfortable with the overall costs, I feel that's the way to go. Good luck! Bob ChadEbert 10-01-2004, 12:16 PM Hey Sharon- Definately go rebuilt. Most of the time a rebuild carries a limited warranty and its been gone thru. A used one is just that...used. It could break 5 miles down the road. Keep me posted. Chad jeeperphil 10-01-2004, 07:48 PM but make sure it is actually rebuilt. some shops only repair a known problem without going thru the whole case. still charge for rebuild. found true on trannies too. sued and won on a rebuild charge that was actually only a repair. some parts stores sell the same kind of rebuilds also. they get them tagged with whats wrong and just do repair. curbside 10-02-2004, 01:20 AM but make sure it is actually rebuilt. some shops only repair a known problem without going thru the whole case. still charge for rebuild. found true on trannies too. sued and won on a rebuild charge that was actually only a repair. some parts stores sell the same kind of rebuilds also. they get them tagged with whats wrong and just do repair. Wow, great piece of advice...just curious how you eventually confirmed you had a repaired case, rather than a rebuilt one. I assume the t-case was originally represented as rebuilt when you purchased it? I think I'm also going to need a transfer case shortly. Glad you posted this. Bob ChadEbert 10-02-2004, 01:29 AM I know the guys I work with here in CA have awesome eithics and I trust them a lot. Currie Enterprises, for one, is awesome. I know in CA that if something is rebuilt, or they claim it is, you can seperate the fakes from the real guys to see if they'll offer a limited warranty on it. Usualy 3 months/3,000 miles is standard for a rebuild. Sharon, if you were closer I'd help you as much as I could. I wish I had contacts on the east coast, but I don't. Feel free to hit me for advice as needed, you have my personal email from the other transmission debacle on the Prelude, I'm more than happy to help. Happy weekend Chad jeeperphil 10-02-2004, 05:04 PM I found out when it went again in only 3mo. I took it back and watched them tag it. I started asking questions and that was how I put it together. A judge agreed. But they can tell different if they have to open it up. Once they do that its a rebuild. Deal with people you trust and check warranties. This happened in Ohio several years ago and laws have changed. Check where you buy with better business bur. You should be ok. Cam7 10-03-2004, 04:13 AM Go with a Rebuild. A used one could last a lifetime or a Day! Faze2183 10-03-2004, 04:16 AM make sure you get papers sayin its a rebuilt unit vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
