Hi there,

The time has come to replace the glow plugs in my old 1981. My supplier has 3 brands to choose from.

-Champion $23.00CAD ea.
-Bosch $17.00CAD ea.
-NGK $16.xxCAD ea.

Im leaning towards the Bosch, but would like some opinions, OR better yet a rating site for glow plugs.

Thanks!
Warren

You can guess my preference, they're the original equipment for the car. Make sure you get the "slow" glow plugs, not the "fast" ones that came in the later models.

I was going to get the fast ones, and replace the controller. But really, to me, a few seconds isn't going to change the world.

Thanks for the reply!

If you want to spring for the relay it's a good way to go. Do you need to replace all plugs anyway?

I bought this car a few years back, and it would never start in cooler weather easily. I would get smoke, and chugging for minutes. When that happened I just drove my other car.

The price, with tax for OE Bosch (NAPAs number 80010), are $81.00 for 4. Might just as well do them all so I know what I have there.

I paid $700.00CAD for this car and delivered pizza with it. All Ive done to it was put in a 5 speed transmission, and some brakes. I still get 800km/tank (about 45mp/US gallon). Im looking for a newer TDI Jetta or Golf, but there are never any for sale out this way.

Well, I replaced the glow plugs. It hasn't been cool here, but it started without a smoke show this morning, and a smooth idle.

3 of 4 plugs were some plugs madein France, and the forth was a Bosch, with a differnet p/n on it.

I haven't tested them yet, but Im sure they weren't generating equal heat. Il test them again sometime...
