1984 CHRY FIFTH AVENUE- BATTERY/ALTERNATOR questionCHRISHARVARD 09-29-2004, 01:58 PM Hey whats good. I have a 1984 CHRY Fifth Ave. The other night, the battery light came on, the car died. I jumped it with a monte carlo and drove it most of the way home, then it died again. I jumped it again with a ford pick up, and it started after some trouble. I got it home, and it looks like I'm going to charge the battery (only $10 :) )provided its not fried...and changed the alternator. MY QUESTION If the battery isn't shot and it can take a charge, is it likely the car will die again with a new alternator once its back in the car? ------------------------------------- CHRIS HARVARD MagicRat 10-02-2004, 11:00 AM With your battery, it may or may not be okay. When these batteries are fully discharged, the lead plates can pick up a coating of sulpher from the electrolyte fluid. This coating decreases their ability to produce an electrical current by up to 10%. So if your battery was nearly new, you should be okay, you won't notice the 10% loss, but if it was pretty old then it might not be up to the task now. rwood13 10-26-2004, 03:11 PM if the battery will take a charge and the alt is good you will be fine wheezy 04-10-2005, 03:36 PM Hey man, I understand what you're talking about. I just bought a '88 fifth ave. off of a guy and I have only had problems. I'm having the same problems, I replaced the battery, alt, voltage regulator, and the pos. and neg. battery terminals and lines. I have even gone through the wiring with an ohm's tester thinking it was maybe a short. I don't want to stick to much money into it, so I have bought three used brain boxes for it, but to no avail. I'm still having problems after all that so I have no clue but maybe this will give you a start on other possibilities. If you figure it out i'd like to know. I have gone three days with a brand new battery until it died on me with out a charge. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
