Replacing Fuel Pumpdude75 09-28-2004, 06:10 PM Changing the fuel pump this Saturday because I believe that is the answer to my starting problem. Diagnostic test and pressure test confirmed this. Wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions to smooth the process. I have a Chiltons manual, the directions that came with the fuel pump, and have researched fuel pump removal/installation here and elsewhere on the net. I have one question Dale or someone else might be able to answer. What "special tool" do I need to remove the tank unit retaining ring. Chiltons says, "using tool 6856 or its equivalent." I could not find the tool at Murray's. any sugestions? Thanks, John dksob81 09-28-2004, 06:38 PM umm well I haven't had the privelage (LOL) of replacing my Fuel Pump yet in my jeep (94 Grand Cherokee 5.2L), I have have done it in many other vehicles. never heard about anyone having any problems with these CLIPS. so I checked my haynes Manual and it doesn't mention anything about any special tool needed to remove the clips. if u want the directions from the HAYNES MANUAL, email me Joe dksob81@hotmail.com , I will send them to u. (Also include Year and Engines size.) dude75 09-28-2004, 06:50 PM Hey- Thanks for your help. I have a 97' jeep grand Cherokee 5.2liter v-8. The Chilton's manual says I need that special tool to remove the module locknut which is threaded onto the fuel tank. Its only for 96-98 jeeps of course that has to be the year you need a special tool to do this job. Thanks again. dksob81 09-28-2004, 07:00 PM in the Haynes Manual it says, to turn the locknut counterclockwise, if it is difficult then use a large pair of channellocks to loosen it, and thats what the picture show, but mybe yours has a Special nut on it, but I dout it. and haynes has been pretty good with NOTING any special tools needed for certain jobs or vehicles. So I wouldn't worry about it too much I am sure a large pair of channellock plier will work, but I guess they could've made a mistake. I will look into it and try to find some more info on what u need Dale Aeppli 09-28-2004, 08:00 PM Changing the fuel pump this Saturday because I believe that is the answer to my starting problem. I MADE NEW ONE OUT OF 3/8 ROUND ROD THREADED ONE END BENT OTHER END LIKE A---J---. TO GET THE PLASTIC RING OFF I USED A APIECE OF HARDWOOD 2X2 , HELD AGAINST THE PLASTIC LUGS AND TAP IT LOOSE THE SAME WAY TO TIGHTEN. DON'T USE STEEL OR BRASS IT WILL CUT LUGS. BE CAREFUL SENDING UNIT IS MOUNTED WITH PUMP. I USED A CARTER FROM ADVANCE AUTO $ 89.99. CHANGED MINE LAST YEAR. USE NEW CLAMPS. THERE'S A TIN PLATE COVERING UPPER HOSE CONNECTIONS. QUESTIONS HOLLER AT jeepman600@aol.com dale :nono: use a little light grease on threads of ring. you can get it pretty tight by hand. dude75 10-04-2004, 08:30 PM Guess what? Changed the fuel pump and I'm still experiencing the same problems. Have to crank three or four times to start. If I turn the ignition without cranking three times it will start on the first crank. Any suggestions on my next move? Thinking the filter/pressure regulator. Starting to get frustrated because I took it to a Jeep dealership and payed a 100 bucks for them to tell me it was the fuel pump. I'm doubting they even tested the pressure. thanks DUlrich1227 10-04-2004, 10:52 PM hows you battery ? Mine wouldnt start at all @ 2mnths ago... was getting very erradict than finally just wouldn't start... They changed the CPS / fuel filter... told me it was done went to pick it .. wouldnt start.... they checked the pressure said i amy need a new pump ( 96 / 4.0 @ 120,000 ) but the mechanic on whim checkd the battery ... turns out it was the battery ... havent had a problem since... Skrilluh 10-04-2004, 11:21 PM make sure your getting good fire from plugs , and after its started doesnt it run alright or any spuddering or having to let it warm up? dksob81 10-05-2004, 12:36 AM ok when it won't start on the 1st attempt check to make sure that the Fuel Pump is working, u may have to take the Gas Cap off and listen for it to kick on (whirring) sound. well let me know of any info. just email me. make sure u include ur problem I get alot of email and sometime ppl don't type there problem in the email so I get lost, and I have to go thru here and look for the problem. Could be pressure regulator or even a injector. Check Pressure it will tell you a lot. dude75 10-05-2004, 12:56 PM OK, to answer a few questions. The battery is new as of last year. Cleaned the posts and clamps over the weekend. Spark plugs are a year old and when the car is starting the idle is relatively steady. I replaced the pump this weekend so if I'm still experiencing the same problems it must be something other than the pump? Strainer and filter were both changed with the pump. Gonna take it back to the dealer Wednesday and have them check the pressure again. All your suggestions and comments are very much appreiciated. Keep em coming. Thanks! dksob81 10-05-2004, 01:24 PM check to c if the Fuel pump kicks on when the Jeep won't start on the 1st attempt then email me. Joe dksob81@hotmail.com leowolf 10-06-2004, 12:15 AM if a pressure check failed, it was likely done on the fuel rail, which is on the other side of the pressure regulator. test the fuel presure again and test it on the pump side of the regulator, im putting my money on a bad regulatior. good luck vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
