Hello:

I am a newbie as a bmw owner. I have a 1990 325i, auto trans., 200k+ miles. There is a roaring sound from the rear of the car, do you think it could be rear universal joint? rear end ? wheel bearing ?

Any help would be appriciated.

that sound could be your rotors, may need resurfacing, or just new pads.

Thank you ! That would make sense but the roar is more vibrating that a rotor or pad problem.
I found a local BMW veteran in Franklin, NC and he test drove the car. It seems the problem or portion of the problem is a rear CV joint, and maybe the drive shaft/universal joint.
