how fast are you going when you feel it kicking in and out? i know that hicas kicks in at a certain speed.

don't know about the oil.

so your tt has never had the plugs changed and it is at 100k miles?!?!?! i would personally change them AT LEAST every 60k miles.

First of all... It's HICAS (HIgh Capacity Active Steering)

And second of all... Let it go out. HICAS isnt exactly held to the highest of esteem in the Zed world.

I would recomend buying the HICAS Imobilizer... Its about $300.

The eariler models used an electric motor on the back of the rear dif. for the HICAS system but as these had problems, hydraulic systems were used later on. You don't have to worry about it going out and wrecking you as if the power does go out, it defaults into straight ahead, where it is 99% of the time. And you have to remember that HICAS can only turn the rear tires about 2 degrees, thats enough to be felt but not enough to send you flying off the road. You can make up your own HICAS canceling bar or get a premade one. Really I think the problem is that people just don't drive the car hard enough often enough to get a feel for how the system affects the car and when it will step in.

Anyway, just for FYI, the HICAS system is run off two sensors, one is sent a signal from the steering system when you turn sharply at lower speeds. The two sets of wheels turn opposite directions so you can turn sharper.
Like so:

/ /

\ \

The other is a speed tripped system that turns both sets of wheels the same direction at higher speeds for more stable turning when you are blasting down the road in top gear.
As such:

\ \

\ \

I personally would recommend finding the problem and fixing it. But thats me. And I'm not the best tailor in the world.

yeah man, i don't see why so many people bash the HICAS system... unless you want to be drifting or something, which unless you're a trained pro, you shouldn't really be doing on public streets anyway (but who am i to talk:biggrin:) even so.. it's just hard on your car and your tires.. besides(sp?) why would you want to cancel something that makes you handle better...

ps, broke i thought the system was only speed triggered? are we talking like say 35 mph for the first one and like 50 mph for the second one or what?

I know the steering sensor triggers the motor when you turn the wheel more than a half turn to the left or right, I'm not sure when the speed sensor comes into play.

didnt the hicas system come on the skylines also??? how come i dont ever hear people rag on the hicas system in the skyline? this leads me to believe that people think that since it is a skyline it is the best and since it is "only a Z" then i must think of something to rag on because i cant find anything else. isnt the z32 like almost the same exact design as an r32 except for the drivetrain???

R32 and Z32 and the S13/14 have the exact same suspensions and many of the same drive train parts. But the Z32 and the R32 had the Hicas system, although I think the R32 had the faster version. I personally like the HICAS system and might convert my car over to it later down the road.

exactly, so y the hell does the z32 get so much shit for the hicas system and the skyline gets praised?

Becuase of the older HICAS system on the early 90s models. THAT was crap. But alot of people are into 1/4 mile drags and the HICAS is bad for that, it makes the car unpredictable off of the line in real high horse power aplications. Most people who have it on their cars remove them when they get REAL serrious about making power, even on the R32s. Its another part that is "flexible" and then tends to lead to wheel hop on hard launches, this is bad. But if you dont go 400WHP you should have a problem with this. The Nismo bushings and such and a properly rebuilt late model HICAS will be strong enough to handle most conditions.

i know all this but it still seems like the z32 gets bashed because the hicas system is shitty by people who dont even know anything about it. but then you mention the skyline's suspension and hicas system on that then people say that it is the coolest thing ever.

Its becuase its on a skyline.

For some reason all of these wantabes love the skyline, yet most of them have never seen one let alone drove one.

I one the other hand have seen a skyline (R34) and worked on it in Houston TX at a freinds shop, making a little cash on the side. He needed some "emissions" help.

i have heard that the system on the skyline and the system on the z32 are differently made. or it could also be "it's on a skyline, it has to be good".
