temp rises when idle or slow moving with ac onromoh 09-26-2004, 07:10 PM i replace the radiator, fan clutch, and water pump. my mechanic is stumped. when temp rises over 200, coolant is forced out throught the overflow bottle. this only happens when ac/fan is on at idle or slow moving traffic. lucky this summer was not hot in nyc, this does get annoying. anyone can help? when can i get a cheap overflow bottle, that sucker is cracked. HI, SOUNDS LIKE YOU'RE SUCKING AIR INTO THE SYSTEM WITH THE CRACKED COOLANT CANISTER. REPLACE WITH A GOOD ONE. YOU ONLY FILL THEM TO THE FULL MARK ON BOTTLE NOT COMPLETELY FULL, ABOUT HALF FULL IS CORRECT. DALE :nono: sorry for sounding stupid, what is the coolant canister? do you mean the overflow bottle? it cracked after i replaced the radiator. thats when the temp problem came up. my original radiator looked huge, the mechanic had a hard time taking it out of my 93 GC with tow package. does that make a difference? any ideas? HI, I JUST USED THE WRONG WORD YES THE COOLANT BOTTLE, THE RADIATOR THEY REPLACED MAY HAVE BEEN A HEAVY DUTY SINCE YOU HAD THE TOW PACKAGE. IT MAYBE A STANDARD RADIATOR, BUT SHOULDN'T REALLY MAKE THAT MUCH DIFFERENCE EXCEPT FOR TOWING. HOPE THIS HELPS DALE jeepman600@aol.com :smokin: romoh 09-27-2004, 07:19 PM HI, I JUST USED THE WRONG WORD YES THE COOLANT BOTTLE, THE RADIATOR THEY REPLACED MAY HAVE BEEN A HEAVY DUTY SINCE YOU HAD THE TOW PACKAGE. HI, WHAT TEMP ARE YOU RUNNING. WHEN COLD SQUEEZE BOTTOM RADIATOR HOSE SEE IF IT FEELS LIKE THERE IS A SPRING INSIDE IT. THERE IS SUPPOSED TO BE SPRING SO HOSE DOESN'T COLLAPSE CUTTING OFF FLOW. DALE jeepman600@aol.com :nono: dksob81 09-27-2004, 08:03 PM also check the Drive Belt (serpentine), make sure it is not stretched, if it is strectched it will not allow the water pump to push adequate coolant to run throw the system. do this by open the hood and start the jeep, turn the AC on, and watch the Drivebelt it will flop around if it is strectched (it will flop alot), and u may hear a water swishing sound. try that. dksob81 09-27-2004, 08:05 PM and it may only show signs of this when the AC is on, b/c of the added pressure from the AC Compressor. I had this problem too. romoh 09-29-2004, 08:37 PM i forgot to mention this earlier. before the radiator replacement, the temp stayed at 210. now the temp is one slot lower. anything 210 and over is trouble. i just step on the gas to get the fan blow hard to cool down, when idle. isn't the computer suppose to regulate the temp? dksob81 09-29-2004, 09:26 PM check for a stretched or loose DriveBelt as I mentioned above then get back to me, Joe dksob81@hotmail.com Dale Aeppli 09-29-2004, 10:18 PM i forgot to mention this earlier. before the radiator replacement, the temp stayed at 210. now the temp is one slot lower. anything 210 and over is trouble. i just step on the gas to get the fan blow hard to cool down, when idle. isn't the computer suppose to regulate the temp? WHAT TEMP THERMOSTAT DO YOU HAVE MY 97 RUNS 208 -210 AND I DON'T WORRY ABOUT. JEEPS HAVE ALWAYS RUN HOT, THATS THE WAY THEY RUN DALE jeepman600@aol.com :nono: dksob81 09-29-2004, 10:30 PM I have a 94 Grand Cherokee 5.2L, and it now runs at around 175-185 max, rairly ever goes above 180 tho. b4 I replaced my radiator I was always at 210 on the freeway and when driving in the city I was around 235. I never thought it to be a problem (thought it was gettin hotter because it was hotter outside, seeing how I bought it in January and all the way up till the time I got it stuck in some deep ass mud "up over the front bumper" it was at or below 180, b4 I got it stuck it was only around 50-55 outside, then after I got it runnin again it was up in the high 60's - mid 70's) then one day on my way back from Pittsburgh (80 miles from where I live) my Crankshaft bent, Timing chain snapped, hole in block, shattered timing chain cover. this was not my best day. I put a new engine in, and about a month later I blew my radiator (10 inch long crank in one of the side tanks). so I replaced it and now I rarely get up to 180. I let it idle for about an hour one day for about an hour (88 degrees outside) and it only got to just over the 180 mark (about 185), I was kinda worried about the other engine going and kinda scared to drive far, b/c I didn't know what caused the engine to go, but now I am pretty sure that it was OVERHEATING that caused my engine problem. I know u were just looking for a simple reply. DALE. and u have a I-6 huh? I think they run hotter then the V8's dksob81 09-29-2004, 10:35 PM and I know u weren't talking to me "WHAT TEMP THERMOSTAT DO YOU HAVE MY 97 RUNS 208 -210 AND I DON'T WORRY ABOUT. JEEPS HAVE ALWAYS RUN HOT, THATS THE WAY THEY RUN DALE jeepman600@aol.com" but I thought I would throw my story in there maybe it will help. altho I don't think he has a problem with his radiator seeing how he already replaced it. jshaw 09-30-2004, 11:50 AM Do you keep adding coolant to the overflow? Your heads are probably cracked and coolant is exscaping through the crack. I have pulled apart 3 magnum motors looking for a good set of heads only to find they were all cracked between the intake and exchaust valve in at least 1 spot on every head. seanpv 10-07-2004, 07:58 PM Did your mechanic put the fan shroud back on? This is necessary to create the suction while your car is parked and ideling, if you don't have one you can expect your car to heat up. It sounds like he didn't replace it with an oem radiator either. I just replaced my 95 Jeep with a Jegs Aluminum radiator and a low temp stat. Everythings works great but since we did some custom work we couldn't get the factory Fan shroud on, while the system cools perfectly driving, when I idle the temp rises. cdlabelle 10-08-2004, 01:28 AM i replace the radiator, fan clutch, and water pump. my mechanic is stumped. when temp rises over 200, coolant is forced out throught the overflow bottle. this only happens when ac/fan is on at idle or slow moving traffic. lucky this summer was not hot in nyc, this does get annoying. anyone can help? when can i get a cheap overflow bottle, that sucker is cracked. I also have a full size 1986 GMC Jimmy 4X4 loaded with A/C. I experienced similar symtoms as you, thinking of the same as you. Check you A/C refridgerant, and your compressor. Mine seized up, the causes of overheating during idling periods, then cool down when in motion, all sound too familiar. In the end, my compressor was seizing up, working the engine harder. Let me know the end results...cdlabelle vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
