hi, Are the tires all the same size both front and back does this happen when you're just driving the jeep with out the boat. Tires must be same height and size for jeep. dale jeepman600@aol.com :nono:

Both your rear ends were smoking? If that isn't a visual...anyhoo...I'm totally stumped, I've never heard of gears being "too tight". Are you running the proper gear oil and additive in the rear pumpkin?

i'm not sure about the fluid, but you think if i just flush the fluid and put the right fluid in that will fix it.do you think anything got ruin buy it heating up so much?

well when u drain the differentials look for metal in the fluid, u may have been grinding away at the gears since it sounds like the fluid hasn't been changed in awhile. and YES heat will cause some major damage, after fluid heating up for so long it will breakdown and do no good.

Very possible the gears are to tight. Especially not that they have overheated and expanded. There are tolerances that have to be adhered to, such as ring gear backlash, 0.005-0.010 in., differential side gear-to-case clearence 0.000-0.006 in. There are also torque loads to be applied to these bearing.
I hope this helps somewhat, keep researching and troubleshooting the subject matter till your absolutely sure of the causes and fixes b4 spending $$$$$$$.......Good Luck

Sounds more and more like wrong lubricant used. Did, you change the diff oil yourself ? If so how did you clean the gear and inside the case?

well the first time i happen i was towing a boat.then i took it toa friend garage and he said that he had to put all new bearing and stuff in.over 1000 dollars in work.then i took it out again and it happen again.so i thought he might used the wrong lube so i went to a jeep dealership and bought there lube and it still does it.

cdlabelle, what do you think made the gears are to tight?and how can i check?i want to find the problem before i have to pay all the money to fix it.i called around to junk yards, and the want 1500-2000 for both rear ends.thats just parts with no labor and who says that they even work?

What makes me think the gears are to tight? You mentioned in your first thread your brought it to a garage and they said, "the cause was the gears were to tight ". Secondly with that kind of heat occuring, that metal expands eliminating the clearance tolerances, heats up, gets hot, starts to smoke, etc etc. You had to good sence to pull over and stop before it seized up completly. Thirdly, your friend re-built and put in new brearings. Did he adhear to the correct clearances. An personally, I think re-building it again is cheaper that going to a junk yard, unless your diff housing and casing is cracked and or bent. How often have you towed that boat. If you've just started, maybe it's to big to tow.......CDL

!500 sound awfull High fom a Junk Yard. You should take it back to where you had it repaired. The only way to tell if the gears are too tight is to pull your Axle cover off and inspect it. You will need a Manual and at least a feller gauge and a dial indicator. Did you check to see if your brakes were Hanging up!
