GM phasing out Oldsmobilecrash 01-15-2001, 06:50 PM GM announced that they would be phasing out Oldsmobile over the next few years. What does everyone think about it? carman 01-15-2001, 07:54 PM I think its good since we hardly see any new Oldsmobiles on the road, if GM isn't profiting, then throw the Olds out! ;) HeadBanger 01-16-2001, 12:39 PM This breaks my heart. Olds has always made some fine automobiles and it's one of the oldest manufacturers in the country. It's indeed sad.. Ron.. enzo@af 01-16-2001, 04:47 PM Yeah, it's sad to see GM scrapping some classics...Olds and the Camaro. But, it's sales that forces these things to happen. Apparantly people just don't go for these cars. Oldsmobile seems to only have one segment of the market to shoot for (with the exception of the bravada, maybe). Maybe with a slightly diversified platform sales might have picked up a little. Perhaps an entry level two-door with some pretty good zip. JD@af 01-16-2001, 07:57 PM Yeah, it makes me sad too. I guess it is just business. Of course Chrysler is also in the process of eliminating its Plymouth division. As for the Camaro, it may be disappearing for now, but I would be surprised if the nameplate were not to be resurrected in the future. I hope it is, and I really think that it will be. enzo@af 01-20-2001, 01:24 AM Yes, I've thought the same thing about the camaro. In fact, when it was originally announced that it was to be axed I heard that they had intent to resurrect it sometime in 2003/4. I saw some concept sketches, but they looked pretty weak. ThunderFish911 02-13-2001, 03:43 PM Yeah, Oldsmobile is going straight down the shitter. Plymouth is screwed too. The next one to go is Mercury... just wait and see. Carguy 03-27-2001, 08:01 PM Oldsmobile used to symbolize success, status and stability. I grew up in an Olds family, starting with a 1963 Olds Dynamic 88 and finishing up with a 1989 Custom Cruiser Wagon. In between there was a 1966 Delmont 88, a 71 Delta 88, a 73 Delta 88 (I got my license with this one), a 75 Delta 88, a 78 Delta 88 and the best one of all, the 98 Regency Brougham. These were magnificent automobiles that were recognizable in a parking lot and always had crowd appeal. But the boys at GM obviously know better and felt that their money is better spent on Gems such as the Pontiac Aztec, (Ughhhhh!). Ransom E. Olds must be rolling in his grave. We'll all miss the Rocket! Carguy Chris 05-18-2001, 10:35 AM I think it sucks. they are the oldest american manufacturer. From the curved dash (first practical car), to the Aurora, they have always been good. GM f***ed them. I feel they could have made it work, but they couldn't. I hate bean-counters:mad: Hudson 08-03-2001, 10:10 AM Originally posted by Carguy ...Ransom E. Olds must be rolling in his grave... Actually, he's probably more upset that it's survived this long without him. RE Olds left the company early on and started another company. Olds also built the REO (famous as the "REO Speedwagon"). The company later dropped its cars and concentrated on REO trucks before merging with Diamond T. Diamond Reo built custom trucks as late as just a few years ago. 87accordlxi 12-01-2001, 02:06 PM im really disappointed. like some other guys here, i grew up in an olds family, my first car was an olds (86 ciera, hehe), and my next car will probably be an olds. i want to get one to keep the tradition alive long after the company goes away Marc 12-06-2001, 08:46 PM General Motors is out of its !@#$%&? mind for dropping Olds!!!! JE123 12-06-2001, 10:16 PM Originally posted by 87accordlxi like some other guys here, i grew up in an olds family, my first car was an olds (86 ciera, hehe) I too am growing up in an Oldsmobile family. I drive a 1990 Olds. Cutlass Ciera. It's not that great looking but it is very dependable, like most Oldsmobiles. They are also easy to fix. It is going to be sad to see them go. 87accordlxi 12-17-2001, 05:07 PM ya my ciera was very dependable too. too bad the cleveland winters ate up much of the body. and if something mechanical did go arong, it was cheap and easy to fix. i remember the only gripe i had was changing the oil filter (i had the iron duke) where the right front wheel had to come off to get in there. DreamsofaCobra 03-25-2002, 03:59 AM I guess I have the same story, first cars I can remember were all Oldsmobiles. A '79 Cutlass Crusier Wagon, and my dads old Omega. I have never seen one of those since he got rid of his. My own '92 Cutlass Ciera has served me well for almost 150k miles. Things keep changing, but what can you do? It sucks. :( LadyBuickGS 06-11-2002, 03:44 PM I was shocked when this news was announced. Where I live there are Oldsmobiles everywhere...New and Old. And I was talking to a guy who use to sell Olds at a large dealer in town and he said they sold MANY Aleros. I guess many wasn't enough...:( I bought an Alero in 2000, and a few months after the bad news was out! I was really upset with GM and this really hurt the value of the car. I feel sorry for anyone planning on turning in their Olds for another car, because you're going to pay for it unfortunately. Anyway, I loved my Alero and did plan on keeping it for another year or two, but the payments were too high because of recent changes in my life. So, I turned it in for a 98 Buick Regal GS. I'm loving the 240 hsp and the extra roominess! Ssom 07-13-2002, 08:07 AM I am dissapointed at this as well, I always had a faint hope that they would some RHD Oldsmbiles down this way................Nonetheless I guess we can sit back and watch them go down the shitter, along with Mercury LadyBuickGS 07-13-2002, 01:19 PM Yeah, Mercury isn't doing too well from what I've heard. Hek! Ford is struggling to sell cars, since the Firestone Tire escapade. I think Mercury is trying to make a come back with the Maurader. It may have a lot of hsp, but it looks like a black Grand Marquis. They should've given it a whole new body style. Of course, that would cost them more money, so they did a G.M. clone thing.:alien: Ssom 07-21-2002, 04:53 AM So the whole Ford range is suffering after the debacle????? I knew the Explorer would, but the WHOLE RANGE!!!???!!! LadyBuickGS 07-21-2002, 05:19 PM That's what I've heard. w155jmh 03-26-2003, 05:01 PM Yeah, GM had to do it. Oldsmobiles used to be the best cars on the road. My first ride was an '87 Ciera Brougham handed down from my dad. Wish I still had it. I can still hear the roar of the Iron Duke (2.5L 4 Cyl.) in my sleep sometimes, and when I hear one on the road, I get the chills. But they don't make them like that anymore and I'm almost glad they're discontinuing now rather than later. rkt88403 03-30-2003, 08:41 PM I live in Lansing,MI. The birthplace of Oldsmobile. I started working on the assembly line at Oldsmobile in 1971. We built only Oldsmobiles here until 1984,when GM made us just another GM assembly plant to build fwd cars. As far as I'm concerned,Olds died then. My first car was a '54 Super 88,that I bought in 1970 when I was 17. 4-Door Flunky 04-11-2003, 02:27 PM I've had my 1968 Olds Toronado for 18 years now. I got a taste of this sadness when the dropped the Toronado from the line. Now, I can accept the passing of the entire line. I would think that GM could find a successful market for cars that are comfortable, innovative, and fast. Flunky turbulence_CC 07-18-2003, 02:38 PM So sorry to hear that GM has Phased out the Olds. Maybe there will be a reincarnation of a few models in later years, preferably the Cutlass or the Alero. GM_man 07-18-2003, 04:59 PM :frown: Hudson 07-18-2003, 11:44 PM Oldsmobile has less than a year left in its life. Cutlass is long gone...Intrigue died last year...the Aurora ended its life this year...next summer, the Alero, Silhouette, and Bravada are gone. turbulence_CC 07-20-2003, 01:05 AM Sad to really see them go. They went through a great transformation the past couple years. Especially the Bravada. GM Should have kept the a few of the top selling olds rather than kill the whole Name. I guess there in that garage in the sky along with the F Body Camaro and Firebird. CARNIGG 08-28-2003, 10:00 AM I agree with whoever said they should have left a couple of cars instead of killing the whole nmae.....I think oldsmobiles were startin to get better around the time of the news......werent they shooting towards the european market with their latest line-up or cars?....it looked to me like they were headed down the right path....they had collectors b4...now they really have some collecters. It's sad to see them go vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
