I have a 1998 Ram 1500 Sport with the factory installed towing package. (Factory installed oil cooler)
The truck has 65,000 miles and the transmission oil and filters were changed at 62,000. When towing my 6,000 lb. camping trailer I have recently had a problem with the transmission overheating, the computer generated high temp light on the instrument panel comes on.
Does anyone have any experiance with what could be causeing this problem. The one transmission shop I consulted belives the Torque converter must be replaced also they recommend drilling larger oil passage holes in the main shaft. Anyon familer wiht this modification.

Sounds like a towing lubrication modification. They add extra lube circuits inside the trans to help keep temps under control. Does it still shift ok? If not its probably smoked and in need of an overhaul. If it still shifts ok I would look into a Larger external cooler and a trans service. Make sure you tow with overdrive off, or you will smoke the fluid in a heartbeat.

Yes it shifts fine weather I am towing or not. Absolutely no other symtoms than the "Transmission Overheating" light coming on.
Otherwise a fine truck that has given great service for 65,000 miles.

there is a ball in one of the lines to the transmission.this stops the oil from draining from the touque converter.if this seizes it will cause the transmission to over heat.

The valve ball could be the problem, like willy said. It can become distorted, and more egg shaped than ball shaped and block coolant flow. Also, check out http://www.transmissionspecialty.com/parts/main.htm to see if Sonnax has any parts to fix an overheating problem. I have a catalog, and I would suggest sending off for one. It's on the site somewhere and it's free.
