Gasket reusable?19RaVeN96 09-19-2004, 01:52 AM I need help. I was wondering if anyone new whether or not the gasket that is for the valve cover to connect if reusable. I took the old valve cover off and put on a new one. Can I use the pre-existing one? I have a 96 accord 4cyl. Any help would be appreciated. AccordCodger 09-19-2004, 06:50 AM No don't re-use it. You're just setting yourself up for leaks and having to do the job over again. 94accordVTEC 09-20-2004, 09:43 AM NEVER re-use any gaskets it will just end up costing you more money when stuff starts to break because the gasket is leaking ProMan 09-20-2004, 11:46 PM This is a general mis-understanding for most people. The fact is, YOU CAN RE-USE THE VALVE COVER GASKET! As long as it's not hardened and brittle and have cracks. I had reused the gasket on my 92 Accord 2 times since it's still flexible and in "rubber condition", and it never leaks. Just make sure you apply sealant at the sharp corners. nittanys1 03-09-2005, 03:24 AM where can you go about getting the sealant? and how much will be needed? jeffcoslacker 03-09-2005, 08:57 AM The new gaskets with an integral carrier and silicone sealing beads seem to hold up real well to reuse. I wouldn't reuse a neoprene of cork gasket, or any composite of the two. jeffcoslacker 03-09-2005, 08:59 AM P.S. Never use sealant on a silicone type gasket. It acts as a lubricant, makes the gasket want to slip or migrate out of position once put in compression. ProMan 03-09-2005, 11:23 AM I always use a high temperature sealant. I do not have the name on hand. Will get it later. It's gold-orange color. I used it on oil pan, plug tube, vlave cover, etc. The amount you need to apply depends. Just make sure it's enough to form a thin layer along the surface that needs to be sealed. You can get it at most auto parts store. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
