Stupid trucktopazwolf 09-19-2004, 12:32 AM OK 97 C1500 4.3 liter automatic. Will crank, but won't start. Actually died on me after starting and letting me start making a left turn. Any ideas? Battery is less than a month old and the alternator less than 1 year. AND YES there IS gas in it!!!! leftmullet4 09-21-2004, 05:48 PM Are you getting spark?? Can you hear the fuel pump prime?? mikeym1 10-14-2004, 10:46 PM my 97 was very similar. It would crank and not start, until the third try. Then, it would start, after the 4th, 5th, 6th try and then not at all. Funny thing was it would only do this after it had sat for more than 4 hours. If it started, every start after that would be immediate until it sat for a long time. My mechanic diagnosed the fuel pump as the problem. His experience with after market fuel pumps was so bad he refuses to install them. Dealer fuel pump price was $467 with a 2.6 hour labor charge and a new fuel filter. Total cost just under $750. Ouch! I remember when a fuel pump only cost about $40 and I could easily install it myself. gwhitcom 11-07-2004, 03:37 PM OK 97 C1500 4.3 liter automatic. Will crank, but won't start. Sounds like the timing belt broke. gwhitcom 11-07-2004, 03:41 PM I had a mercury mystique with the same problem.. timing belt went. after I checked the electric and gas and scrached my head for a few days. yep timing belt. PigPen5150 11-08-2004, 09:23 PM This vehicle doesn't have a T-Belt. The Timing CHAIN may be toast. Check your rotor underneath the distributor cap. Sometimes they'll get a little loose and screw everything up. I agree on checking for spark though. Then if you don't have spark, pull the distributor cap and see if the rotor is moving. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
