engine problem

95 eclipse gs with 120,000 miles, driven fairly hard most the time. One day my brother took my car out with little oil, drove it like an idiot, brought it back and when I'd drove it afterwards it would make a tapping noise once the rpms got to about 3500. Put oil in it drove it carefully for about 3 weeks then one night reved it to redline and the car turned off. Checked it out nothing to be found but when i took the valve cover off i found that a piece over top of a spring was the piece rattling. Tried to rotate the engine at the crank, would rotate 3/4 of the way and would stop and not go any further! What should I do, maybe just reod the head or is a whole engine needed. Need help on how the determine.
