Just bought 1997 Oldsmobile 88WVMountainman 09-10-2004, 07:10 PM I just bought a 1997 Oldsmobile 88 it has a 3.8L V6 with about 80,000 miles on it. I was wondering how it will compare to my old car, a 1992 Oldsmobile Achieva SCX that I recently spun the barrings on. I was wondering how it will fare compared to reliability, gas mileage, power, acceleration, ride quality and any other specs anyone could help me with. Thanks for any help. WVMountainman 09-10-2004, 08:44 PM sorry forgot to say, I haven't driven it yet. Its at home and I'm at college right now. auto trainy 09-11-2004, 07:55 PM I have two 88s and all I can say is if you don't beat the hell out of it its a very well built car, good ride, handling, and performance,I'm curious how did the bearing spin out on the achiva wer you beating on it? WVMountainman 09-11-2004, 11:20 PM nope, just alot of miles on it, plus a little punishment from the previous owner, my brother. He's a little hard on cars. I like to try and take care of my cars. I'm sure all the mountains around here didn't help either. WVMountainman 09-11-2004, 11:30 PM When it finally died I was trying to drive up a ridge and it had already was having a little trouble the power was dropping hard, then it stopped completely and locked up. About five minutes later I was able to start it back up and limp home. auto trainy 09-12-2004, 05:51 PM I always try to down shift whenever the engine starts to labor, they don't build engines the way they used to,they run a lot more consistant but will not take the abuse like they used to.I have a friend that works for GM and he has told me stories of these cars lasting for 2 to 3 hundred thousand and still going, always remember its still a six. 87accordlxi 09-16-2004, 02:01 PM I just bought a 1997 Oldsmobile 88 it has a 3.8L V6 with about 80,000 miles on it. I'd be willing to bet that the eighty-eight will be more reliable than the SCX. The 3800 is definitely a better motor than the quad-4, in my opinion. Acceleration may be comparable or a little slower than the Achieva. The SCX had what, 180-190hp? But you'll like the torque of the 3.8. And the 3.8's will last forever, which is something I don't think most people can say about the quad-4. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
