Ignition Problem

I'm new to the forum and have an issue. I have a 1993 Mustang LX 5.0 with 5 spd transmission that I replaced the battery in last month, and I noticed the postive battery terminal cable needed to be replaced as well. Upon replacing the battery cable I thought I had connected all of the wiring back to the starter relay just like it was before I started. I continued working on the car after replacing the terminal cable (changed the oil, etc) and took the car for a spin to make sure everything was OK. After returning to my house I parked the car in the carport and put the keys in my pocket. Suddenly the car started to crank itself and it sounded as if something fried under the hood. Smoke came from under the hood and I immediately popped the hood and removed the positive terminal cable from the battery. There was a bad electrical smell as if something fried. Now the car will not turnover and when I touch the terminal cable back to the battery it sounds as if the starter is engaging. Does anyone have any idea what I've fried? I can see no immediate signs of damaged wiring and the starter relay seems visually to be OK. Any help would be appreciated!!!

You may have bypassed the relay if you hooked something on the wrong post and now you have a constant power going to your starter. Also the relay could have had a meltdown and now is making a connection somewhere that it shouldnt.
