I ran out of gas and had AAA tow my car home. I refuelled from a portable gas container (2 x 2 gallons), but my rodeo 99 (80k miles) won't start. Tried several times last night and again this morning, and now it appears that the battery is weakening from the repeated cranking. Please help!! (I ordered a service manual last week and it is on the way)

Your fuel fiter maybe clogged with dirt that got sucked up from the bottom of the tank.

Thank you John! Now is that something I can fix on my own? I got tired of paying too much at the dealership, So I have decided to do as much on my own from now on.

Hey! I found another posting in the form on how to change the 99 fuel filter. I should be able to fix it using the information.

Changed Fuel Filter and jump started. Still won't start. Is there anything else I am missing?

When you first turn the key do you hear the fuel pump kick on. It should last for about 2 - 3 seconds, but it's audible and noticeable. Also you could have some clogged injectors. If you don't hear the pump then I would check the fuel pump fuse (found in the engine bay fuse box). HTH

I am not sure if this would apply to a Rodeo. I have heard of cars running out of gas and not starting due to losing thier prime. The injectors could have lost their prime and are not spraying. The other posts are also possibilities.

if it had a carbeurator that would be possible but not on this fuel injected vehicle. If you ran it out of fuel it is possible you could have burnt the pump on it they get very hot while running and need the fuel to cool them down the Troopers are very bad for this concern and I have seen it on a few Rodeos

Here is another idea. Did you run out of gas or did your fuel pump fail? Were you watching the fuel level? Did your fuel sending unit work prior to the car stopping. Just trying to eliminate the some of the possibilities.
Like someone said to me today "better to ask stupid questions than make stupid mistakes".

I am having the same issue. My gas float is stuck so I can't monitor gas usage except for my odometor. It showed I still had plenty of miles to go , but the truck just stopped the other day. Sounded like it ran out of gas. We are pretty sure it's the fuel pump...can anyone email me as to how to change it? My husband is not very mechanically inclined and we can't afford a shop.

rodeo711, I have 2 questions

1) did the instructions to change the fuel filter that you found match the link I posted below???
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=249415&highlight=change+fuel+filter

I'd like to know if you found something different.

2) which manual did you order, and how did you order it, I need to do the same right away!

thanks

Tell your husband to buy you some tools and a apron for himself. Then:
You need to empty the gas tank, disconnect the battery, relieve the fuel pressure, drop the tank remove the pump and float.Replace the stuff and put it all back. So says the Haynes manual. 89-97.
So if you don't hear the fuel pump turn on for a few secs when you turn the key get the pump and sending unit. Check fuses first.

i had a similar problem with my 1992 rodeo,i had drove home very low on fuel, and later that day went to start the car and it wouldnt,i replaced the fuel filter, bc it was clogged with stuff from the bottom of the tank, then i put in new spark plugs, and had to crank it a few times for the fuel pressure to build up and get to the engine.....hope this helps
