Hello, I have a 2001 Camry LX 50,000km. When I accelerate I get a high-pitched ringing, whistling type of noise (like a cicada's noise only constant. It only occurs during acceleration. I have test driven two other similar Camrys. One had the same noise to a lesser extent and the other one did not have the noise.
You can not hear the noise when the windows are closed, however it is very obvious from outside the vehicle or when the windows are down.
Toyota was not interested in finding the source of the problem. They just said it was normal and that the Camry engine is a noisy engine. (typical pathetic response, they just could not be bothered taking it any further).

Anyway, any clues as to what this noise is would be greatly appreciated.

Might be your timing belt or one of your accessories or accessory belts.
