I need to replace my fuel tank cap on my 95'camry. The book says to use only a genuine Toyota fuel tank cap for replacement. Non of the auto parts stores on the net carry genuine Toyota fuel cap. Is there really a difference between the fuel tank cap from the dealer for 22 bucks vs. one I can get from Pep-Boys. Any thoughts???

No, you don't need a genuine Toyota fuel cap. The Pep Boy specials work just fine. Just make sure you install the correct cap.
I believe all caps are non-venting these days. If your in a state that requires smog testing, they will check for proper cap installed and will fail you if its not.

Why is it required to put a non-venting cap ?
Is there any other reason than the requirement for smog testing in some states. ?? Thanks !!

Non-vented caps have a number of functions.

They don't let gasoline vapors into the atmosphere and prevent hydrocarbon air polution (most important).

They keep the gas tank pressurized. This keeps water vapor out. This pressure in the tank pre-presurizes the fuel system to minimize fuel delivery problems. Keeps gasoline from evaporating the low-boiling components which are lost preferentially. There are probably more that I am unaware of.

I would spend the few extra dollars and buy a Toyota cap. There is a great variation in quality between parts in these stores like PEP Boys, etc. For cheap parts like this which have potentially great importance, why take a chance on what you buy?
