Camry 98 starting issuesrubs 08-24-2004, 10:24 AM Hi, When i start the ignition key in the morning or after several hours of idle time, rpm sometimes remain very close to 0 or sometimes jump to 2000 before coming up/down normal. sometimes it don't start first time and i need to try 3-4 times before it even startup. I recently changed the wiring, spark plugs and also checked the battery from sears that looks like ok. Is this the issue with starter or something else? Thanks --rubs burchard 08-24-2004, 11:23 AM Hi, When i start the ignition key in the morning or after several hours of idle time, rpm sometimes remain very close to 0 or sometimes jump to 2000 before coming up/down normal. sometimes it don't start first time and i need to try 3-4 times before it even startup. Thanks --rubs Your AIC (air intake control 0 valve might be sticky. Search this site for air intake control rubs 08-24-2004, 06:00 PM Thanks a lot..i will check this..i was also going over the archives in whcih u replied that if rpm goes to 1500 before coming down it might be temperature control and not air intake control.... so it looks like it mighe be one of this reasons....... can it also be starter issue or no Thanks --rubs yotatechie04 08-24-2004, 11:07 PM Check for vacuum leaks as well. Brian R. 08-25-2004, 02:32 AM Doesn't sound like a starter problem. burchard 08-25-2004, 10:08 AM On a cold start your rpms will go to 1500. That's normal. Then when the car is warmed up the rpms will go to 750-800. In fact that means that your AIC valve is working. Erratic ups and downs of the rpms while at idle point to a temp sensor. yotatechie04 08-25-2004, 10:22 AM I agree, I've got starter problems, and I don't experience this...although vacuum leaks are a cause to a jumpy engine...check your hoses on your intake and make sure they aren't deteriorated or anything. rubs 08-26-2004, 10:15 AM Thanks a lot for all this informatiom. today was real bad day..it was hot still i have to press ignition key 8-10 before the ingine finally starts...now i think this looks like a urgent issue....for all this temp sensor/vacuum leak/AIC valve do i need to go to dealer so some local mechanic can check it and how much this check should cost? Thanks --rubs burchard 08-26-2004, 02:38 PM Thanks a lot for all this informatiom. today was real bad day..it was hot still i have to press ignition key 8-10 before the ingine finally starts...now i think this looks like a urgent issue....for all this temp sensor/vacuum leak/AIC valve do i need to go to dealer so some local mechanic can check it and how much this check should cost? Thanks --rubs If it is a TEMP sensor most of the local mechanics will miss it. Either you measure the resistance of the temp sensor yourself (it should decrease from 30 K ohms when cold to 0.2 khoms when wharm) or you take it to the dealer so they can connected to the scanner. I the ohm readings start going up and down (100 kohms) it means that the temp sensor should be changed ( $50 + 10 minutes labor). rubs 08-27-2004, 10:51 AM actually dealer charged a lot just for checking the stuff...so for this issue that i need to start ignition key 3-10 times after every idle time and engine always crank when i start ignition key but only starts after some tries, what should i check first: temp sensor air control valve vacuum or i should just tell the problem to mechanic and let him fix it....it might be issue since last month when i gave the car for brake change and ask about mechanic opinion he feels start might need to be change and he was charging 400$ for that. Thanks --Rubs Check the pictures in the gallery of my last post. This is a picture of a 95 4 cyl camry. The 3rd sensor on left is the temp sensor. disconnect it and connect a voltimeter to the terminals of the temp sensor. Switch your voltimeter so you can read kohms. start you car and l;et it warm up . When cold should give readings about 30-40 kohm. after 10 min of idle sould go down to 0.3-0.4 homs. keep an eye on the readings. If they start going up an down (0.3 to 50 or more kohms). get yourself a temp sensor, remove the defective one and replece it. Do not forget to put some teflon tape in the theard of the new one. If its not your temp sensor let me know rubs 08-27-2004, 04:25 PM Which temp sensor do i need: Engine temp sensor intake air temp sensor coolant temp sensor air charge temp sensor air cleaner temp sensor thanks rubs burchard 08-29-2004, 02:29 PM Which temp sensor do i need: Engine temp sensor intake air temp sensor coolant temp sensor air charge temp sensor air cleaner temp sensor thanks rubs Engine coolant temp sensor. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
