I have a 1997 Grand Cherokee and the information center has been flashing rear lamp failure for the last 5 months. There are no lights out in the rear that are out??? My friend has a 1995 Grand Cherokee and it is doing the same thing.....anyone know the fix or have any suggestions.
Thanks

You probably need a new lamp outage module.
CIRCUIT OPERATION
The Lamp Outage Module (LOM) determines if a rear lighting lamp is not operating. When the ignition switch is in the START or RUN position, circuit A1 from fuse 8 in the Power Distribution Center (PDC) connects to circuit A21. Circuit A21 feeds circuit F87 through fuse 5 in the junction block. Circuits F87 feeds the LOM.
Circuit G46 from the LOM connects to the Vehicle Information Center (VIC) . When the LOM senses a inoperative lamp, the VIC displays the data to the vehicle operator.
Circuit L90 which feeds the tail lamps and side marker lamps, connects to the LOM. From the LOM, circuit L90 continues to the license plate lamps. Circuits L21 and L22 from the LOM power the tail lamps and side marker lamps.
Circuit L50 from the stop lamp switch connects to the LOM. From the LOM, circuits L73 and L74 power the stop lamps and circuit L87 powers the Center High Mounted Stop Lamps (CHMSL) . Circuit Z1 grounds the LOM.

are you sure that there are no lights out?pay attention to the third brake light because it has 3 bulbs and if one is outit will give you that message.also make sure that all of the bulbs are the right ones.i've seen a lot of people swear that there are no bulbs out when one of the third brake light bulbs is out.another common thing is if there is trailer wiring that can cause problems especially if it is aftermarket or if it gets corroded.i'm just saying be 100% you have eliminated everything before you replace the lamp outage module.im a tech at a jeep dealer and i have never seen a lamp outage module go bad yet.thats not to say it never happens but i work in a shop with 15 techs and its all jeeps and i have never seen it

I have replaced several of them myself, but still good advice. Check over everything thoroughly before throwing parts at it.

Thanks for the advice (my 95 is showing the same error). Since all appear to be working (I've checked a couple of times) it's worth checking the 3rd brake light with the 3 bulbs. Is it relatively easy to get into this?

There was only one phillips head screw to remove from mine ('94 jGC) to get at the hi-center brake lights.

I also have a '97 JGC. I logged into this site just to post a thread with this same topic. I was happy to see that someone beat me to it. I just started getting the same message this weekend and I would swear that all bulbs are working. However I did check during the day, so I'll check again at night. What a coincidence.

I am willing to bet it is ur high mount stop light (center brake light), I had the same problem when I got my jeep and couldn't figure it out which bulb was out, had a friend hold the brake pedal in and I look'd it was 1 of the 2 bulbs in the high mount stop light was burnt out. I would get a friend hold the brake pedal and go over every bulb in the rear u will deffinately find a burnt bulb somewhere....
P.S.... does anyone have a 93 or 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee w/ a 5.2L V8, I need a pic of the Vacuum Harness that connects the EGR Valve, Intake Manifold, Throttle Body, Purge Solenoid, etc........ please send pics to joe at [email protected] please no diagram looked at all diagrams from Haynes, Autozone, and in engine compartment, none seem to be exact.

I have had the SAME prob w/ the "Rear Lamp Failure" message. I have looked at ALL the lights 10 times or more..and have found NONE out. I keep reading that the High mount brakelight has THREE bulbs, yet, I believe mine only has 2 (Am I missing one? Is THIS my prob?) I'll check back.
Thank you
Thank you

Yes, that's likely your problem. I had my 95 in getting a trailer hitch installed, and after they were done, I had the rear lamp failure message.
I thought "Oh great they fried my lamp module"
But after checking, and re-checking I *finally* noticed the third bulb in the high mount brake light was out. It was the middle one, and I assumed there were only 2. D'oh!!

Has everyone checked the reverse lights? because i checked them and they were out, but i replaced them and they are still out and im still getting the rear lamp failure warning. I have heard that it could be a switch on the transmission, i bought the new switch but i can't find where it is.

It is the NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH. It is located on the driveside of the transmission right by the shift lever on the tranny.

This makes sense. I have the same issue, but the warning only comes on when I push in the button on the shift lever. Is the safety switch located inside the truck, under the console, or on the transmission itself? Also, how hard is it to change?
Thanks!

I get that one in my '95 Orvis; usually when applying the brake at low RPM. Sometimes, my 3rd stoplite will stay lit with the message, sometimes not. On mine, turning the key off, then restarting always clears it.

Yeah, I have had this issue for a couple months. I thought all mine were working too. Did a quick check by disassembling the high mount and found the one in the center was out...it is real tough to tell how many are in there without taking it apart to check.
Now if only my owners manual could get the replacement bulb types right..four out of five have been incorrect. So I always go by what the lamp guide on the bulb aisle says now.
If in doubt, pull the lamp before shopping...to save yourself the aggravation of the :runaround:

Well, my intermittent problem with message turned chronic. After reading all the posts here, I checked my upper brake lamps; one of the three was out (bulb 191?). Replaced it but still got the error whenever I'd turn on the lights. Today, I had some free time so I pulled both rear corner light units. One of the top/outside mini-bulbs was out. I also pulled both license plate illumination lenses and both lamps were out. I went to Schucks and bought a package (each) of 168's and 194's, sorry but I forget which went where. I also pulled all the 56 and 57's and gave each base/socket a glob of dielectric grease. Donno which one(s) did the trick, but my REAR LAMP error no longer comes on when I turn on the lights. Hope this helps someone.

I had the same problem with my 93 JGC Ltd, found the problem with the wiring to the trailer hitch. Fixed that, Rear Lamp Failure went out....and has not returned since.

I have a 94 JGC I am getting rear lamp failure. I have no backup lights. I already replaced the switch on the tranny repaired the connector. What else am I missing? The bulbs are good.
