88 cherokee won't start or turn overthescherz 08-23-2004, 03:34 AM I have an 88 Cherokee with a 4.0L 6 and low miles (for an ’88) 110, 000. 3 weeks ago it appeared as though the battery was dieing…it took longer and longer for it to turn over, but would still turn and start. It finally died after 2 weeks of this, and jumped started (no problem) to get me to the shop to put in a new battery. This battery lasted about a week, when my Cherokee stalled out on me while going 25 in a residential. It took several tries to restart…did restart...and was fine getting to my destination. It was then deader than a doornail when I tried to start it next. It jumped started again, but remains dead. I have a new alternator in it…the (new) battery tested good and is recharged, and it still won’t turn. The dome lights are fine until I try to turn the ignition, then they go out. Dome light, glove box light, and the radio all go dead, but the under the hood light remains faint sometimes, and the clock always manages to stay lit. there isn’t a clicking sound or sound of a turning engine whatsoever…just some of the engine dash lights coming on: engine, break, check seatbelt, etc…that begin to faintly light up, then complete darkness. I know this was a long post…but I was trying to avoid follow up questions. Any suggestions? JDPascal 08-23-2004, 11:06 AM To check this out yourself, you will need a digital volt meter (also known as a multi meter). 1. check the battery voltage with the battery connected and the key off. It should be at least 12.6 volts . If not, then there is something draining the battery charge. To do any further tests, you need a fully charged battery. I WOULD CHANGE THE CABLES, FOR NEW ONES.
