Quick question on jacking points. I am trying to jack-up the front end of a 91 v4 Camry. I can see the front cross member, but it is too far to reach with my floor jack. There is a center member connected to the bumber and to the front cross member. Can I use that one without demolishing my rust heap?
Hilton/Chilton is not very clear on jacking points for a conventional floor jack, so any help would be much appreciated.

You can try it gently. Place a 2x4 between the jack and the car cross-member to distribute the load. Make sure the emergency brake is on and the rear wheels are chocked. Stop if you see any bending of the cross-member.
A better way would be to use the designated jacking points behind the front wheels. One side at a time with jack-stands inserted after the jack has raised one corner of the car. Then move the jack to the other side of the car and repeat.
