idleing problem......

I just bought a 1997 JGC Laredo, 4 liter inline 6 about a month ago.

I just got my JGC back from my brother, he had it for a week up at school. Anyway the idleing is a lil messed up, it will idle at like where ever it normaly is like 500-600rpms. Then all of the sudden it will drop to like 300 rpms then jump back up to normal. Will do that about every 10 seconds or so.

I would really like to get this fixed, thanks

check the ignition coil, Crankshaft position sensor, Camshaft Position Sensor, and Throttle Position Sensor, I am sure u will find ur problem in one of those.

also possible Vacuum Leak, and the Idle Air Control Valve (Motor) could be bad

REPLACE the air idle control valve located on the back of the throttle body here is a link if you want to order it and a pic so you can recognize it

I had the same problem

good luck

Is there away to check the idle air control valve to see if it good or bad before i spend the $50 to replace it?

i havnt noticed it in awhile, it use to only happen after it was drivin for more then 30 mins. But i do notice that sometime it idles a lil rough when first started. Could that be caused by the idle air control valve?

Also i replace spark plugs and ignition coil.

if you followed dales advice and cleaned aroud the inside of the throttle body with carb cleaner while the engine was running, it would have temporarily fixed the problem

did the problem go away after changing the coil and wires?

with mine, the car wouldnt idle, it would surge from 700 rpm to 300 rpm and sometimes stall, until it was warmed up.

yes a rough idle could be caused by the IAC along with numerous other things.

You will need a scan tool to completely test the IAC. u could use a multimeter, but it will only test if it is getting power and resistance, it won't actually tell u if the IAC is operating properly. I would take it to your local jeep dealer or Auto Mechanic and have them test I IAC w/ scan tool to be sure.

they will most likely charge 40 bucks to scan it, are there any other simptoms like the cruse wont engage?

well when i first got it i noticed that the cruse would not work. Then i tried it again like a week later and it worked fine ever since.

Do like auto zone ( or other local auto part stores) have the ability to check the IAC valve?

also where is it located? (i replaced one on my moms car but it was right ontop of the engine)

the IAC is located on the back of the Throttle Body (left hand side on ur model) toward the valve cover. it has 2 Torx head screws holding it on. and a 4 prong wire connected to it.
