what should i set timing at?

what shoudl i set my timing at with a 86 305? just curious because i cant find it in any books or anything so i was just wonering if anyone knew what it should be set at...thanks

any mods made to the engine? let us know as much as possible and intended use.

no mods, the engine is the L69 305 with is the HO version, all i have done is dualled the exasust took ou the cat, and thast all, i plan on using it for a daily driver, but also i plan on running it at my local drag strip..thanks for the help.

8 degrees for economy or 10to12 degrees for performance.you will know if you gone to far if it starts to ping.

I have seen balancers actually twist and throw off the timing markings from where they should be. I now do my timing on old engines the quick and easy way. Retard then advance and find a sweet spot in the middle. A few times doing this and test driving you can get an engine running very close to perfect. Only after I have the engine running great will I put the light to it and check the markings.
