I took my Ranger to a local mechanic due to the check engine light appearing. He did a diagnostic($90) and told me that the code is 401. He also told me that this was the only code that had over 4 different areas that might be the problem. He is telling me that it is probably two of the sensors and that it is going to run me around 200 to fix it. I just want to know if I am being hussled or is this a legit problem. Any help is appreciated

P0401 is a really common code to pull. There could possibly be many different problems, including the EGR valve and the DPF sensor. Most of the time it's a bad DPF sensor that causes the problem. It's inexpensive, easy to replace and you'll need one eventually anyway.

I agree, replace dpfe sensor 1st . about 60-70 bucks from dealer. easy to replace. don't forget to disconnect battery after replacing to clear cel. next time go to autozone, if in your area, they read codes for free

Yeah The mechanic tried to call to see if I would come in and I am going to have someone else replace the Sensor that you have both mentioned first. I am amazed how someone is willing to throw away a lot of business by trying to take advandtage of a consumer. I have been buying gas from this guy for over a year, not any more.

Check with your local dealer, I think the EGR 401 code is covered as a defect (ie - ford is replacing the defective sensor for free) yupper

Same code came up on my dad's 01. It was a bad DPF, seems to be a common problem from what I hear, more common than a bad EGR.
