This actually looks do-able (scroll down about mid-page). Anyone here successfully (or unsuccessfully) tried it?

Yes, it does work. I just bought a 1995 GCL with no
display. I soldered both resistors and reinstalled the stereo. Everything works fine now.

Good to know! I don't think I'll ever have the time to take the dashboard apart and try this, but I'd love to find someone who could fix it without charging me a fortune... That black screen is pretty darned annoying.

Actually there are only about six screws to pull the panel off that covers the radio. A couple more that holds stereo in.

Unbelievable.... This morning when I left for work, I looked over and was stunned to see "track number" and all sorts of other info on the previously black screen! First time it's worked since I bought it last month.

The next time I started it, it was on, then went off. I knocked on the screen and it came back on but went off again and stayed off.

Too weird--I guess for whatever the reason (perhaps being on rough roads yesterday?) the resistor was able to make contact again.

It's good to know that it's probably fixable if I ever have time to try to take it apart....
