1991 Pathfinder Grinding Noiselcslider 08-13-2004, 01:53 PM I have a 1991 Pathfinder with 110,000 miles. I am hearing a nasty grinding or rubbing noise in reverse and low gears (1st gear or just after shifting into 2nd gear), with a definite feel that the engine or transmission is not running free. The problem is intermittant (very occassional and usually just when the car is cold), so it's hard to get a real fix on the source of the problem. The manual transmission is the most-likely suspect. Any suggestions on what I should look at or troubleshoot? Thanks for any insights. jarhead1 08-24-2004, 11:04 PM Hello , if it means anything...I recently heard a noise like that of a baseball card on a bicycle spoke etc... it started about 4 days ago and also could be construed as a low grinding growl at low 2-10 miles an hour, and then it goes away ? lasts 7-15 seconds... my friend believes there could be dirt on my abs system...and I don't know if you have ABs but I can also tell you that there are days when it seems sluggish-like holding back and then some days it feels like im in a fast car..?? please let me know if you get the fix. JW324 10-09-2004, 06:15 PM I have a 95 pathinder with a problem: In the low foward gears (or perhaps just first) there is a subtle chatter sound, as if not fully engaged. And when moving there also is a strong grind as if wheels scraping, but when the car upshifts this noise goes away. Additionally, when in Park, Neutral, Reverse, the same chatter noise, as if not fully engaged, or perhaps not properly released from another gear, is striking. These noises are consistent since they started. Sometime when just starting up and putting in gear, D or R, the car stalls unless I quickly hit the gas to make the car move, which eleviates the danger of stalling. Any help is appreciated. lcslider 10-10-2004, 07:59 PM I have a 95 pathinder with a problem: In the low foward gears (or perhaps just first) there is a subtle chatter sound, as if not fully engaged. And when moving there also is a strong grind as if wheels scraping, but when the car upshifts this noise goes away. We ended up deciding that our grinding noise was a clutch problem. After overhauling the clutch, the grinding noise disappeared. No further problems, thankfully. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
