depends on the year, I bought an 81 for $2000, but it had a lift and 33's. I've looked at some 90's and above and they go for around 10,000 and up

hows the reliabe factor??

xtoyotacorex
09-10-2004, 10:08 PM
I had to replace the clutch shortly after the trade, and now my timing chain needs replacement. My buddys truck worked great until the carb- stopped working. So reliabilty factor wasn't that great, but hell it's fixable.

kenwood guy

do you think I should get one??

Kyle4130
09-11-2004, 04:43 PM
toyotas are very reliable. it all depends on how many owners have had the truck before you i guess. if you get a newer one that is barely used it will go forever as long as your not to harsh on the truck. i know this guy that has a stock pick up with 400,000 miles on it and all thats been replaced is the clutch. its crazy.

dude the 22-R engine is bulletproof! I think toyota used that engine for 15 yrs or something like that on their trucks. The engine is immortal. I have 210,000 miles and so far I had to replace the clutch, and the timing chain, but everything ealse is fantastic. Everybody I know that has a toyota, and has kept good care of them go up to 300,000 miles no prop. Then when shit starts to go wrong rebuild and get another 100,000 if you want. Easy to work on, and parts are affordable. And for 4x4 toyotas I think are the best import mud cruncher there is, close to jeep though, to answer you question, if your planning on getting a trunk, get a toyota. But make sure you do your research on the truck though. Ford trucks suck balls, mazda sucks, dodge is good, nissan??? I think they are cars posing as trucks.

s10's are good trucks too. I forgot about those, to my knowledge their are no 4wd s-10's, i could be wrong, but they are made well, whatever you do, do NOT get a ford ranger, thats a good recipe for poo.

I got my 88 4X2 with the 22R back in 1996 with 86,000 miles for about $5000. Today it has 177,000 miles and all I have replaced are the clutch, clutch master and slave cylinder and fan clutch. The rest is normal maintenance. Toyota's have a higher resale value because they are generally good trucks. I love mine.

Well I guess that my mom's Nissan pickup with 400,000 miles must be a car. She only had to change the clutch once.

The 1 toyota that I owned had a 5 speed that would blow up whenever I went up a hill with more than a feather in the back.

I'd rather push my Chevy s-10 4x4 than drive a Toyota... unless a cliff is involved with the toyota.

how many fuel pumps have you gone threw?

OverBoardProject
10-09-2004, 03:25 AM
Zero for me, the key to making fuel pumps last long is keep clean fuel in the tank, change the fuel filter during the tune-up, and if you ever fry a fuel pump get the tank cleaned when changing it.

During the winter try keeping the tank over 1/2 full, and use plenty of gas line anti-freeze. A little 2 stroke oil in the gas tank from time to time (just a spoon full) in the fuel during the winter will also extend the life of everything.

hey you know what i say to tell you the thruth ive seen alot of trucks off road, including my own 85 toy and nothing can touch toyotas in the mud other than a suzuki samurai and you can rebuild a toyota from the fram up for about 2 to 3 grand easy.
oh by the way chevy, ford, dodge good for pulling and hauling not having fun for the amount of gas they suck and un-needed size they are

kenwood guy
10-12-2004, 02:37 PM
but I plan on getting an s 10 or a early toyota truck I just want to be sure im getting the best choice

g_metalowl
10-13-2004, 05:01 AM
well that depends, you said early toyota truck but you had no age referance on the s10.

id say that for the amount of work you'd put into a early toyota (which is not much) compared to an early s10 id say go with the toyota unless of course you're planning some 350smlblc engine swap then go with the s10. but then again depending on where you live on the "mainland" aren't chevys a dime a dozen? id go with the more unique every time: toyota, you wont regret it for sure expecially when you cruise on by someone else off road

ahhh... see you don't need to drive good with toyotas and they last.
i have a ase chevy fanatic mechanic and hes been driving a 87 toyota around as an every day truck loves it cause it don't give problems with over 240grand on the odom.

kenwood guy
10-14-2004, 02:46 PM
how about parts cost????

OverBoardProject
10-14-2004, 11:07 PM
Well Toyota parts usually cost more, but they usually last longer (except for their transmissions) so parts wise they probably almost equal out.

Toyota 6 cylinder fuel injected motors look like a total bitch to work on compaired to chevy's so the toyota mechanics bill is probably higher for the same job's

12-19-2004, 06:07 AM
there are s-10 4x4's but i think they should be avoided. a few of my friends have had them and are not even close to a toy 4x4. toys are tougher, longer lasting, more capable, and actually easier to work on IMO.The 2wd s10 with 4.3L is a nice little truck though aside from bad gas milage but the power about makes up for it.

If the post is dead than why are you still posting?? American cars/trucks are inferior. You can't even compare a Toyota Pick-Up with an S-10. Wanna go wheelin?!! Ha Ha!!

My friend had an old toyota pickup truck, 4 cyllinder, drove the SHIT out of it, beat it like an unwanted stepchild.
well, when he sold it, one of the pistons had melted and fuzed to the inside of the cyllinder, and it still ran great.
that was the only problem with it too.

Toyota makes the best trucks as far as i know, and i must agree w/ that thing about pushing chevys... see it all the time. The only time i've seen a Toyota at the bottom of a cliff, it was driving out of it, usually pulling some crappy american made truck.

also, read my siggy.....

Just to tell you, My grandfather own's an 87 4X4 S10 with a 350 in it.

Although it is not as good as a Toyota because my 87 Yota will run big mudslinging circles around it.

I bought my 94 4X4 Toyota that is shown in my avatar for $4200, and it was a 22-RE with 95,000 miles on it. But a woman pulled out in front of me and totaled it.

My 87 4X4 Toyota I bought for $2000 caused it leaked a little oil, but I put another 22-R engine in it for $700 and it runs like a charm.

You deffinitaly need to get a Toyota.

I got an 88 toy for $500 bucks. Its nothing special, but hey it always starts right up. Needs a lot of work to it, new brake booster, fix the backfiring problem, spot weld the frame, but other than that its got 193,000 miles on it and it runs, which is all I can expect out of a $500 buy. Love the looks too!!!!!

Get a pro to weld that frame up for you.
If you get pulled over and they see any shabby welds they'll pull you right of the road, and Toyota's had probably one of the worst frames for rust problems back then. So they know where to look for patched up holes

i dont think youd need a pro to weld the frame, its all in how much you trust yourself. yes it would be a good idea to have someone do it that is really expierenced. saftey is a big factor. i highly doubt a cop would would notice a weld job. i havent been runing shocks on the front of my truck for about 5 months now. never had a problem with the police. (knock on wood or whatever) but it is a bump ride. :/

What can I say, except that if you lived where i do your truck would probably be off the road with a quick roadside inspection with the missing shocks alone.

And since those 80's Toyota's have frames that rust out thay's the first thing that they look at up here.
When they see a welded frame they want to see the welders stamp of approval.

The best welder in my area won't touch a car frame, saying it isn't worth the hassel of dealing with DOT (dept of transport)

Besides I wouldn't want to drive my vehicles unless I thought that everything was in safe operating shape.
If I didn't care I could have just saved $800 Canadian replacing my cars worn out struts and springs. It handles like a new car now, my tires should last longer. It was well worth it.

I actually live in the worst place that I've ever seen for Safety checks, but it does keep us on our toes and our cars safe.

In my opinion Bilstein Shocks are the best!
I usually get KYB gas-ajust, just because of the Huge price difference

I know a pretty good shop to take it too. I really don't think cops will be bothering me though. Out here in hawaii, everythings pretty relaxxxxxed. Only reason im doin the frame is so I can roll over bumps without worrying about the truck folding in. I really need to take care of it though, because its right behind the cab part is pretty much more than 1/2way rusted around, as long as I don't go "Baja" with the truck for now though, it should be fine.
