Noisy Tappet / Worn Cam Shaft?

Hi

I have a 1996 Ford Escort (UK) 1.3i HSC and have been attemping to adjust the rocker clearences as one is particularly noisy. Whenever the clearence is adjusted to the recommended clearence (0.8), the next time it is checked the clearence has completely gone (not even 0.2). But, if checked again, the clearence may be 0.8 again? If the clearence is reduced to 0.6 (when available), once the engine is started, there is a very deep, random noise comming from the engine but the noisy rocker is much quieter.

I first tried replacing the rocker assembly (rocker shaft and the rockers) but this made no difference. I also replaced the pus rods which again made no difference.

Any ideas as to what might be worn, and how i might fix the problem. The engine has to hydraulic rockers or camshaft followers if that helps?

Thanks for any help

Chris

you will probably find that the shoe end of the follower has cracked off,and that in turn has worn the lobe on the camshaft, engine out job i,m afraid old son.new cam and followers are needed, quite common on the hsc.

Hi

About 2 weeks ago, the same rocker was found to be very far out (if i have to guess i would say at least 0.5cm). Could this have been caused by the "shoe end cracking off"?

What would need to be replaced, a whole new camshaft or cam individual cams be replaced? Would it be possible that replacing just the follower would be enough and if so, can it be changed without removing the engine. I only ask as i have neither the tools nor the expertice to remove an engine!

thanks

Chris

unfortunately the engine has to be removed to take the cam shaft out, also the followers come out from below(sump off)it is adviseable to replace the whole as a kit, which can be got from any good auto parts store,or fords themselves.

Hi

How long do you think the engine has left? I dont really have the money to get it repaired at the moment.

What would happen when it does "go". Will this happen suddenly or will it be a progressive kind of problem?

thanks

chris
