'92 Camry rear light failure/transm light

The rear light failure warning light comes on in my '92 Camry when I press the brake pedal, and the transmission gear indicator light on the instrument panel lights up the "R' even though the car is either in park or drive. I've changed both the tail light bulbs, but the problem still persists. Also, when the car is moving, the transmission gear indicator light on the instrument panel doesn't light up any gear. - Any one have an idea what might be causing this?

dickr,
As far as the the warning light coming on when the brake pedal is pressed, check the high mounted brake light. It will come on when that light is burned out and the pedal is pressed. Have someone hold their foot on the brake pedal while you check it out from the rear of the car. If it's out, I believe the bulb is a 921. Sorry I can't help on the other problems.

Mike: Thanks for the reply. I replaced the high mounted brake light when I replaced the two tail lights, and the high mounted brake light is working.

Common suspect for these type of problems in that model is the wiring harness near the trunk hinge.

Daniel: Thanks for the reply. I agree with your assessment based on other similar problems, however, the part that confuses me on my problem is how the transmission gear indicator light on the instrument panel would also be affected if it has to do with the wiring harness near the truck hinge. But I'll keep researching it.
