The vehicle is a 95 XLT Explorer with 4WD. I want to change the fluid in the front and rear differential's. I have the Chilton manaul for my Explorer. I changed the fluid in the transfer case and that was easy. In the manual it says to use "hypoid gear lubricant SAE 80W-90W. Simple enough but in bold print it say's to "add 2oz. of friction modifier on models with front locking differential and use only locking differential fluid Ford part # ESP-M2C154 or it's equivalent, and add 4oz. of friction modifier Ford part#EST-M2C118-A. On the next page it says if the differential is a Traction-Lok limited slip unit,be sure to add 4oz. of Ford modifier C8AZ-198546-A or equivalent. I'm confused about this. Does anyone know what the proper lubricant is for the front and rear differential? I don't even know if I have the front locking or Traction-lok! Can someone help me out here. I would like to do this job myself but I don't want to screw it up either. Thank-You for your help! John

the friction modifier is an additive for the clutches in a traction lok.95's use 80w90 lubricant .your rear differential
is probably a locker. the front is not. use the same lubricant for both diffs, and add some modifier to the rear.
tranfer cases need atf, no modifier.

I would use Amzoil gear lube and from I understand you don't need to use the modifier. Is this true? Thanks! John
