Hi Everyone,
I've been searching the forums for the answer to my following question, and couldn't find an exact answer, so please bear with me if you've heard this before....
I have a 2001 Camry that I have personally been driving for about six months (it was my mother's before that). It has 42K miles on it. I have done all normal servicing as well.
About eight weeks ago, my check engine light went on. I brought it to the dealer to have them run diagnostics, and they informed me that my gas cap was not screwed on tightly enough, and sent me on my way.
About two weeks later, the CEL went on again. This time, I brought it to Autozone since I can't afford 99 dollars every time this light goes on. They told me the same thing-gas cap. This has happened two more times, and this last time, I brought it to the dealer, and one of the guys suggested that I buy a new gas cap. I refilled my gas tank, put the new cap on, and went to Autozone to get the codes erased.
That's where I'm at now. I'm nervous that this problem won't end...especially since it had to happen when I'm looking to sell the car!! Out of all the times...
By the way, the car runs wonderfully. No other problems that would make me think it's something serious...but who knows.
I'm just looking for some insight into this situation. What some possible outcomes might be.
Thanks! :banghead:

Don't worry about a problem that may not exist anymore. See if the gas cap fixed it. It is a common problem.

It's a vapor sensor in the gas line, not the gas cap. My car has the same problem. the sensor failed but it's not important enough to be replaced. I've been driving mine for almost a year. You just have to go get the CEL reset every once in a while. I've been driving with my CEL light on for three weeks now and it's just the sensor.
The only problem that may arrise is your gas gauge may be off slightly. Mine says the tank is empty when there is still 3 gallons left.

If replacing the gas cap fixed it, it's the gas cap. Let's wait and see.
