advice pls - 4runner clutch problem?westoaklander 07-23-2004, 03:43 AM i have a 98 4runner 4x4, manual. last week, the clutch cable (to the slave cylinder, i *think*) was replaced. i just drove 700 mls last night. this afternoon, i turned on the car and was unable to shift into 1st gear. 2nd worked but difficult; 3rd didn't, 4th difficult. began driving in 2nd. after a few hundred yards, car began shifting alright. parked it for 3 hours. got back in - same story. very hard shifting. any suggestions? couldn't see a leak but perhaps the cable again? also - anyone know a good mechanic in san diego (which is where i'm stuck right now!) thanks! Buki 07-23-2004, 07:19 PM I don't think there is a cable, but I think it's a piston that goes into the slave cyclinder. Sounds like it has to bleed, just like brakes. Doug Rodrigues 07-24-2004, 11:28 PM Have someone watch the clutch pedal bracket while you operate the clutch. Sometimes the bracket can develop a crack and flex. If that's the problem, the bracket is easily replaced. You can do it yourself. westoaklander 07-27-2004, 06:19 PM I don't think there is a cable, but I think it's a piston that goes into the slave cyclinder. Sounds like it has to bleed, just like brakes. thanks! there is a cable and it did need bleeding. hope that solves the problem - so far so good. cheapest fix i've ever done to a car ;) marc olivera 08-04-2004, 02:19 PM I have a 95 toyota 4 runner and all i need to know is the fluid you need to use. is it brake fluid or trans fluid or power steering fluid!!! thank you Buki 08-04-2004, 02:31 PM It's Brake fluid, get any brake fluid with DOT 3 or 4 spec's Here's the best: http://www.bakerprecision.com/neobrk.htm BUT you will have to drain the ENTIRE system of the old stuff. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
