Engines shuts down while drivingmillerc 07-17-2004, 11:13 AM My 1998 Chevy Lumina was starting just fine but the engine suddenly kick off as I was driving. Also when this happens the needle on the fuel gage would go up to full, even though I had nowhere near a full tank of gas. I had the fuel filter and air filters replaced but it is still happening and now it won't even start. Please help. 98Lumina 07-17-2004, 01:38 PM Can you give more specific details? pcosmasc 07-17-2004, 02:06 PM Does it still not even start. If so, i would first check for any loose hoses or wires or something. Maybe dead battery. It could be a lot of things. Is it working yet. Did you have it towed. Is so what was the outcome? What was the problem? 98Lumina 07-17-2004, 03:21 PM I'm thinking alternator, but if past experiences prove anything I'm probably wrong. millerc 07-17-2004, 03:53 PM Can you give more specific details? Last week the car started just fine, no problems. I was driving on the highway doing about 60 mph, then suddenly the power steering had tightened and the engine was no longer running. The gas gage needle went crazy and moved to say that I had a full tank of gas. I pulled it over, and it started right back up. Now it just will not start. It acts as if it is trying to start but doesn't. Thanks millerc 07-17-2004, 03:56 PM [QUOTE=pcosmasc]It is being towed off as of today. I had checked the battery cables and loose hoses but didn't find any problems. Thanks 98Lumina 07-17-2004, 05:22 PM i really do think it's the alternator. I assume that if we have the same gauge cluster, you probably don't have a volt meter. The volt meter has a tendency to pulse shortly before the alternator's had it. Did you notice your dome light of headlights slightly pulsing (with the engine running) within the month prior to your problems? vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
