help this is driving me crazy. the car quits for no reason that seems apparent. at low speeds usually when im turning. when i accellerate then let off for a sec the car quits. never at higher speeds. sometimes it quits on startup, twice sometimes before running. i had a diagnostic done but since the problem is intermittant it didnt show up. how many sensors would i randomly have to change to correct this. love this car but its a surprise every day. come on you mechanic guys help a blonde in british columbia thanks in advance Eve

I am not a mechanic so if any of this is incorrect i beg of you to correct me. The first thing that comes to my mind is the idle.

Ignore the next paragraph if you know what idling is.

Idle speed is measured in rpm's and the gage is on the left side as opposed to the gage on the right side which measures how fast you are going in mph or kph. When you are stopped you are idling.

The idling speed can be easily adjusted. The Hanes manual for mercury villager tells you how to do it with pictures. I think all you need is a screw driver and you can do it.

On most fuel injected engines, the idle is not adjustable. Yes, there is an idle stop, but that is factory set and should not be tampered with. However, your problem is probably in the idle circuit. The PCM (Powertrain Control Module) regulates the idle using a device called the Idle Air Control (IAC) solenoid. It's commanded open/closed to adjust for engine loads at idle, such as A/C, power steering, and electrical loads. Chances are the IAC is faulty if the problem is intermittent.

Check your air filter for debris.
