1990 750 iL Seat Questioncaribeso 07-14-2004, 03:46 PM my wife's 750 interior lights went out, and to my chagrin, the fuse was not in the bank under the hood. so i embarked upon the tedious process of taking the rear seats out (did the passenger one first unfortunately, and only found the battery. hope i don't have to replace that baby anytime soon.) i did find the fuses on the other side, but when i proceeded to put everything back together (a few weeks later - i got busy and was not too excited about fighting with the seats again), i could not figure out where to plug in the 4 pin connector that comes from the back (vertical part) of the seat. i believe that it only controls the up and down of the headrest, but thought it would be best to hook up if possible. i thought there were wires coming from the bottom of the seat, or maybe from the cavity below, but found nothing. i know its not a good idea to wait so long to put it all back together, then you forget where everything goes. does anybody know where these 4 pin female connectors are, and are there any tips on dealing with this horrible seat removal/installation process? thanks jeffreyb4me 07-14-2004, 09:52 PM with having the wire colors I'm guessing it's for the headrest drive. it connects directly to this drive unit but I've never tried reconnection with the seatback still in the car [not sure you can reach it] but the bottom of the seat back will pull pretty far out and may give you access......if you think the seat bottoms are 'fun' the seat backs can be just as 'exciting' to wrestle with. Reinstalling the power seat bottoms requires a little patience and take your time each time you start over, because you will, start over at least once. 1] get familiar with your bottom, sorry, but really, be for reinstalling it turn it up and find the guide abs at the rear of the seat rails and make sure the release 'button' on the front moves freely, straighten it if need be. find where those two tabs need to slide into the body 'brackets' under the seat as you'll do these last. 2] next, pulling the seat back forward a little, find the two metal 'eyelets' in it that those long two 'hooks' on the seat bottom have to go into. you need to insert these by 'brail' using only your fingers as eyes. 3] with the seat harness connected and the switch and covers installed [not sure how you took it appart], position the seat on the opening with the rear of it low and the front on top of the floor wall ****the seat bottoms should be removed after*** ****running them all the way forward then back** ****just a bit, it's ok if you didn't, just easier**** get it as centered as possible, then, using your finger 'eyes' get the seat bottom 'hooks' into the seatback 'eyelets' one at a time until your sure they're both engaged. NOW , without losing this engagement, it's time to careful slide the seat back, keeping it as low as possible, to engage the two bottom tabs into the floor....start over again now if needed, it WILL go back together. WHEN ALL IS RIGHT, the front of the seat bottom will easily 'snap' down to engage the release latch at the front of the seat. 4] lastly, the seatbelt receiver 'safety bracket' if they still exsist, I've seen many apparently tossed out when the seats were removed.......don't know why, they're the easiest part of the job, anyway the front of the 'loop' engages the floor in the rubber bushing and the rear bolts down with the belt receiver to the floor. 5] FINALLY, turn the key on and admire your handy work [test the seats operation while your at it]...... For some reason this is a most dredded job to many BMW tech's, I just don't understand why............jb. 6] p.s., I think I thought of everything but if I forgot a tip, you'll be the first to know....smile ! ! ! caribeso 07-15-2004, 12:32 PM dear jb (or anyone else out there) thanks so much for the seat install info. i basically did what you said, but it still isn't easy trying to get everything in there correctly at once, and they don't usually fit very well. maybe the reason people leave out that v shaped bracket on the side of the seat is that the back bolt is a pain to get to after the seat is in, and it is easy to strip it unless you get the perfect angle. you only have a tiny gap between the bottom and top of seat to get your ratchet in. about the wiring; the connector coming from the seat back is a black, 4 pin inline male connector (similar to the white 6 pin inline connector that connects the seat bottom to the lower wiring harness). i just for the life of me cannot find any possible place to connect it to. maybe there was another harness somewhere, but i can't even find where that would attach to. anyway, mostly its the kids that sit in the back, so i guess its no big deal if those head rest never will extend again... thanks vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
