im a driving newbie who just got a lisence. ive been recently into cars and dreaming about my future car. i would drive a infinity G35 (skyline) if the world were mine, but of course i could not afford that much on my first car. im looking at sunfire at the moment. although my mind is stubornly fixed at the nihon, the price of sunfire is appealing. would you recommend it over japanese cars? any input will be appreciated.

Cool car as far as looks go. And shares an engine with the cavalier which has more of a deceptive reputation for being fast. But watch out, the sunfire has a more trendy appeal, as the did the sunbird in it's day, which means that in ten years it will be a 1500 dollar car regardless of condition. But for good gas mileage pretty darn good looks and good performance out of a four cylinder i would go for it. I have seen several of those cars with over 125,000 miles and still going well. Good luck, and choose wisely.

Ohhhh god why in heavens name would you ever consider buying a Cavalier or Sunfire??? Good lord have mercy on your soul!!!

Please dont buy the Sunfire. You seem to have somewhat of an interest in cars butg youre new, so you havent been exposed completely to the automotive world. You dont know all your options yet.

Please let me help you!! Just answer some of my questions...

What is your price range? What do you want in a car? Automatic or stick?

And please, dont buy a Sunfire. Oh god, just the thought....ohh.....

Oh well, since shit has already washed over this thread, I might as well add in that you would be foolish not to get an early 90's Japanese car.

Ok, to bring this thread back from hell and get it back on track. My girlfriend, her brother, and their cousin have/do own/owned various trims and years of sunfires. If you are an average driver, who doesn't intend to race, wants pretty good gas mileage, and will take a bit of care of your car, a sunfire may be an ok car for you. I personally am not a fan of any pontiac other than the trans am, but that is because I am more performance inclined. The sunfire suited my gf perfectly(before it was totaled in an accident) I would recommend just about any japanese car over it, and would recommend that you go out and test drive a few as well as a sunfire, before purchasing anything. See what you like better. I can guarentee a Japanese car will outlast the sunfire, as well the sunfire will lose value quicker. Try test driving some hondas/acuras/toyotas and see how you like them. Stick with a 4clyinder car for better gas mileage, go with a 6 cylinder if you want a bit more power. Hope that helped a bit, and welcome to AF

Yea, this thread really did go to hell... Dont go with a sunfire, this is possibly one of the worst cars sold out of America today. It should be easy to find a pretty new Honda Civic or a Toyota Carolla. There is no redeaming features of the Sunfire that I've ever seen. A used VW Golf would also be a good option. The value of the Sunfire will drop like a rock. It simply isnt worth it.

I also have been looking into buying a sunfire. I am 17, so this will be my very first car. I have test drove 3 sunfires so far, as well as a grand am. I havn't gotten as far as to test drive any other cars, but i am still looking. I am finding the whole car searching thing to be complicated and tiring. I want a nice, affordable, yet small/sporty, used car, and they are hard to find, especially in good condition.
I plan to put 3,000 down and finance the rest, but i dont want anything above 9,000. which is what made me take a second look at the pontiac sunfire. i have heard exellent things about it, that it gets great gas mileage was one of them, but then i have also heard they are a piece of crap basically. I have read reviews that the honda civic is one of the best compact/midsize cars available, and has great gas mileage...yet i still cannot decide. I guess i have been leaning towards whatever looks the best, which is not a good way to buy a first car i know.
the first sunfire i drove was nice, a 2003, red, new condition, yet the brakes made a wierd sound and had a hard time stopping, the dealer said this was because rust forms on cars that sit in rain in the dealership for more than a week. but the next two sunfires i drove did not have this problem.
the second one was a 2000 silver sunfire with a sunroof...fully loaded, but it had some chipped bubble like things on the paint around the window, and it made a wierd sound in the front, which, when i told the dealer, said it was something with the ruder.
so then i drove the 2002, silver sunfire, fully loaded,
what a dream
drove great, i loved it
9,000 dollars or more depending on how far i can get it down too
yet i am still not convinced
Anyone have any tips/advice/
if you have anything to lean me AWAY from a sunfire, that would be helpful since so far i love them too much.
If i had my choice i would get a jeep grand cherokee and be done with it.
but thats just a dream of course.
