91 Escort GT Manual Transmission Compatibility

I'm looking for some solid info on manual tranny compatibility for my 1991 Escort GT with 1.8L DOHC. I've heard that there a few tranny's from various years/models that are compatible: MX-3, MX-6, Probe, Protege from what I've heard. If anyone has a cross-reference list of models/years for the tranny's that would be great. I scattered my 3rd tranny a few days ago and I'd like to get another, preferably a better one if possible.

get one for a 1.8 Mazda MX5 Miata with the shift kit.

Probe tranny has the same bolt pattern, but it's about a inch or 2 bigger. The protege would probably be a better bet, or go with the same tranny. The 1.9 EFI HO GT would be compatible with the LX 1.9 SEFI Tranny. The only alternative will be get another ford, or get the mazda protege. I thought MX-5's and MX-6's were rear wheel drive....
