Heater fan has only 2 speed, lower speeds don't work is this a big problem with the Cav. is there a recall for this problem?? Where is the board to change and fix this.

It sounds like the blower motor resistor craped out. What year cav is it? I work for a chevy dealer in service so i can tell you where it's at and how to check it out.

i had that happen on my old cavy, 95. It was either off or full blast.

Found the problem on earlier post, the resistor as noted by 5150cavy was gone. Changed it for new one just by the blower motor passenger area under dash, now works all speeds. This seems to be a big common problem on Cav's.

I have a similar problem on my 2000 Z24. There are 4 fan speeds and the fan motor works only at speed 3 and 4.

Can you help me identify what this resistor looks like, and where it is located with respect to the fan motor underneath passenger front dash area ?

What does this resistor cost, and can it only be found at a dealer ?

Thanks,

This is such a common problem that if a vehicle goes into a GM dealer with this fault on warranty, GM will not pay the dealer for the Diag and tell them to replace the resistor box first thing. They are a bit gay really not very well designed and it happens in lots of different models but mainly cavs because people tend to leave them switched on all the time due to having to turn the position switch to switch it off! easy job except for it's position right againt the firewall behine the dash and the motor assembly!! Lay upside down on the seat for best view but blodd rushes to your head!! Good ol' GM!!!!!

Yeah, while changing my heatercore I nearly passed out and felt sick for hours after due to the bloodrush, whoo! It felt like someone was rocking the car!

It is a waffle (circuit-board) the size of 3x4 inch with a BIG socket on one end. It is behind the blower motor under the passenger dash/glove box. If you remove the passenger-side bottom panel/cover (where your toes are), you won't miss it.

Autozone.com sells for $15. When I replaced mine, dealer didn't return my call on the cost but do expect them to be twice or 3 times the $15 amount.

As far as I'm aware this is a main dealer only part but hey that may just be up here in Canada. Try calling Autozone etc as they will be able to tell you straight off. I believe they call it the 'heater fan speed resistor unit'

It is called "BLOWER/HEATER SWITCH" and made by "WELLS". The one I bought for 96 Cav is $15 and they got one for my 2001 Grand Prix for $18. They are not available at stores and you will need to go to autozone.com and create a vehicle profile and buy it online. The shipping is free and you will get in 3-4 days. Mine was shipped from Lousiville, KY via UPS.

I just ordered from Autozone for my daughter's '96 Sunfire (same as the Cavalier) Wells # DR784, $14.99 (on-line order only). They hit me for $4.99 S&H, plus $1.01 tax. (Not much of an incentive to on-line order anymore)

These are the same exact charges the local store would asses if I ordered from the store, but it's still better then the Echlin part from Napa at $24.00 for the same thing.
