I could be wrong but I think the "official Ford" meaning is Super High Output.

The SHO V6 made by Yamaha for Ford is the best engine that a Taurus will ever see. This is a very impressive engine that will withstand sustained high RPM's like no other. Factory redline is 7300 rpm, & top speed was 144mph, The engine rated at 220hp@6100rpm but will climb up over 8000 if the rev limiter is disabled. In 89' was the fastest & the lightest of the years. These V6 motors arevery durrable & study and many will run 250,000 to 300.000 miles without major repair. In 96' the Taurus SHO was fitted with a Yamaha built 3.4 V8 that was very impressive however had a overhead cam problem that required major engine work at any time after 75.000 miles. If this problem occured it would crash valves into the pistons rendering the motor severly damaged and unreasonably expensive to fix. The 0 to 60 time was'nt as impressive as the 45-125mph time. This engine had horse power at the top. The car would exceed the 144mph top speed if it were more aerodynamic. The wind resistance holds this car back.

Motor Trend, issue 5 of 1995 tested an Automatic SHO to 0 to 60 in 7.7 seconds, but obviously with an engine like this, designed for top end power it would be much quicker with the 5 speed due largely to the fact that the gears could be spaced better if you have one more ratio to play with
