97 Camry won't start...

Hi Gang,

I've got a 97 Camry (automatic) that won't start. It makes a "ka-chunk" sound and the starter doesn't get going. I've tried using another battery to jump it but that didn't do it. Then I went ahead and replaced the starter and got the same result. Perhaps an ignition relay? The lights and interior electrical are working. I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.

Check your battery ground connection on the body. See if you can turn the engine clockwise with a wrench using the crank pully bolt.

In addition to what Brian suggested make sure the connections at the battery are clean and tight. Sorry if this may seem obvious but I see this many times helping friends.

Thanks Brian & Mike, I've tried that. The fact that electricity flows to the lights, stereo, and interior seems to indicate that it's something other than the battery. I'm still trying to sort through the fuses. I can obviously check the small fuses by sight but don't know how to check the larger modules.

Just because your lights, etc. work, doesn't mean your connections are good enough for your starter. Disconnect them and clean them if they are anything but bright metal. You need alot of current for the starter - maybe 100 times what you need for anything else.

Did you try rotating the engine with a wrench?
