I am interested in purchasing a 1991 bmw 525i from a guy localy. It has 160,000 miles and it is a stick. He wants 3,500 for it, it has 17" m5 wheels along with new continentals and new front struts. the drivers side seat is shot and there is minor rust bubbles. is this a good deal? Should i expect to run into some major problems in the future? This would be my first BMW.

Hi Der Deutscher:

I did a little research and I used the method most banks, and lending institution uses, the Kelly Blue book. At their site I plugged in for information a: 1991 BMW, 5 speed, in Fair condition, with 160,000 miles and it came back: $3,090.00. SO and going by the blue book value you will be paying $410.00 over! :loser:

Now of course this Kelly blue book is more less a good average of what the car is actually worth on todays car (BMW) market.

Before I would buy any used BMW I would have it checked out by a good (BMW) mechanic who you can trust.

Also I would make sure it has a clean title and I would run the VIN through CarFax.com and to be on the safe side I would run a VIN check through the local police dept., to make sure it is not stolen or something.

I do wish you the best in your hunt for your Bimmer, and I hope this research can help you.

Sincerely,
Presley348 :smokin:

PS,
To answer your question. As far as I know, most all BMWs especially the 5 series are well known over the years to be fine autos, no matter what the year, but that is as long as it has been serviced properly and the paint and interior taken care of. :icesangel

If you are still interested in that particular Bimmer a 525i, (personally I would look for a good preowned 530i because it has more power 225hp, compared to 184hp on the 525i), with 160,000miles, you might ask to see a set of service records, and if he or she can not produce one, you might offer that person $2500.00 and see what happens. But there is no way that I would give him/her what he is asking for it :banghead:

Today we are in a buyers market, (used of new), and there are more BMWs out there for sale, take your time, do the necessary research, and get the "most bang for your buck!" $$$ :iceslolan

Guten tag der deutscher, Have you bought the car yet?
I wanted to add a few things you might take notice of with an older 5 series bmw. How is the front end? Do you hear clunking and rattling when you stop and start or hit bumps? If so that's a sign that Control arms and Thrust arms are worn and need replacing. They are not too expensive and can be found on ebay quite readily. If you're able to do it yourself, it's not too much effort to replace them either. If you have the M50 enigine in the car, then it will have chains to drive the cams, no belt worries then. Exhaust is another problem area on older Bimmers. well any old car will have a rotted out exhaust really. The stock bimmer mufflers cost a bunch too. 350 bucks on average. I have a 92 525 touring and haven't had any other problems other than the front end and exhaust. I'm lookign to buy a 92 525 sedan myself but it has lots of problems.
Best of luck to you.
Norbert
