88 Camry check engine lightplhunkele 06-17-2004, 05:19 PM Can the codes be pulled on a 88 Camry with just a meter? My daughter is bringing her car by tomorrow to see if I can save a trip in for service. Autozone says they can not pull the codes on this model/year. I borrowed a Chilton's manual; Toyota Camry 1983-92, but it doesn't seem to cover the check engine light or pulling codes. She says it began hard starting; cranks normal but needs a second try. Runs fine otherwise. 113000 miles. It was dealer maintained before she received it from her grandmother last fall. Thanks for any help. Didn't know they had a six. ; ) No problem. Since I was already reviewing my shop manual when I read your post, I went to the section to find the procedure. While thumbing through pages, our esteemed fellow member Joe W. already provided the link to the site where you could find the code; which is a good site indeed! :bigthumb: So with that being said, you should be all set... Good luck with resolving the problem with your daughter's car... plhunkele 06-17-2004, 07:24 PM Thanks! If I'm reading this right, on the 88 these test points will be on a free hanging connector under the LH side of the drivers dash. I do not need to disconnect a harness connection. I believe that if this test point connector is free hanging that it will likely be capped? It may become obvious when the car is here, but... Right on any points? I'm uncertain of the significance of the "TDCL" over the illustration. Thanks again, Paul H plhunkele 06-18-2004, 02:54 PM This site has the info you need www.batauto.com In trying to find the test connector for this 88 Camry; From the www.batauto.com link I found this page: http://www.troublecodes.net/Toyota/ I am not yet finding a connector location for a 88 Camry. It seems to call off 89-94 for the top illustration and 84 only for the bottom illustration. I searched in both places for lack of a better lead, but I'm not finding it. Any help would be appreciated. The 88 connector is by the drivers side strut tower. It read that there were no codes stored although it has been hard starting and the check engine light was momentarily hanging on. It's been suggested that I consider replacing the fuel filter - it was last changed in '94. Also to check the cold start injector. Haven't yet looked to see if Chilton will tell me about the cold start injector. I think it's a 10mm. The cold start injector is in from of the intake, uder where it says EFI. I unbolted mine and cleaned it with brake cleaner, and it worked. When you unbolt it, let the car sit overnight to let the fuel pressure go down, or else you will get sprayed. :( Good luck Dude! Keep us posted! vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
