I have a 1993 Cherokee Jeep, thats been in and out of the garage to try and find out why it keeps leaking aircon fluid, its been tested many times, yet only seems to last 2 to 3 days, I am now told the leak must be behind the dash board.
What's behind the dashboard ? Is it the Evaporator Core ? and how can I be sure that this is the source of the leak.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hoover 666,
Okay, from the limited knowkedge I have of your situation, I could tell you, that if your cherokee is being fully charged, and leaks 3lbs in a couple hours or even days, it has a major leak. The best way to find leak is with a electronic leak detector. If a shop is doing your work, I would suggest changing(from what I know of your sit). The reason being is that if they are throughly leak checking your system(which under EPA guidelines they should be), then they should be able to put the sniffer in one of the vents, and eb a ble to tell if your evap is leaking(considering the 3# in a short period of time). I would have a tendency to believe that it is not the evap. I work in the ac field(as a residential and commercial tech, not auto), and have dealt with this stuff on a regular basis. This is not to say that it couldn't be the evap, just more likely to be either the compressor, condenser, or recievers dryers tend to leak on these on occasion. Also be sure whoever is doing this is using R12 if your system has not been converted to R134a. If they are using R134a, and its an R12 system, you'll burn the compressor up. If the jeep is charged, make it as quiet as you can around it, and listen to hear if you can hear it leaking out, cause thats a fairly big leak. It'll sound like a tire going flat. Well, I might not've been much help, but I joined just to reply to your email.

hoover 666,
It never hurts to get a scond opinion. It just takes a little extra money to get it diagnosted, but in the end it could save you, if you feel the shop your dealing with is kind of crooks. Best of lck-B

hoover666,
I have the same problem in my '97 Cherokee. Used the dye test four different times. No good. Recharge would last just about three days whether I was running the A/C or not. ONly information that was the least bit helpful was the possibility that it was leaking out of the pop-off vavle. Apparently, the grill was to mucked up with bugs and dirt and stuff. This caused pressure to build up within and the R12 would leak out of a pressure valve. (Not sure if this is an accurate discription but it is how I understood it,) ANyway, my mechanic gave me fifty cents for the power washer, I sprayed it out , recharged it and it lasted the rest of the summer...
This summer I'm back to the same ol' same ol'. So I moved to the Northeast where we don't use A/C!
Good Luck!
