AC Accumulator?cbftbl87 06-13-2004, 06:18 PM I went to Pep Boys and had the $25 AC UV check and there wasn't any leak but they told me I needed a new accumulator, which was going to be $250 when all said and done. The guy said he tightened something up on the accumulator and it was working somewhat so I decided to not get the work done. Well the AC seems to be working fine to me. Anyone had anything like this happen before? Was this just a temporary fix or can I expect it to quit soon? leowolf 06-13-2004, 09:19 PM Sometimes there will be a forgin object brake loose in the system, it winds up in the expansion valve, if the valve is blocked the head presure goes orbital and limits the gases from expanding at the engineered rate. without knowing what the original problem was, we can't answer your question. but if this was the problem it most likely won't come back, the accumulator is where the expansion valve is located. jroxx 06-14-2004, 06:49 AM leowolf is right and believe me the guy at Pep Boys was just trying to make money. If the accumulator was bad then it would still be bad. The only thing he could have done to it was tighten the low pressure switch and if that was loose it would have leaked all your freon out and the system would not have worked. If it is working and blowing cold air then leave it alone. Believe me when I tell you this.....I have been a mechanic for 30 + years and yes I am certified in A/C repair....... John I'm new to this site. I agree, if it isn't broke don't fitit. I had a similiar problem (leak). I tightened the pressure switch on the accumulator, recharged and the system works fine. the switch base is nylon and depresses a schreader valve in the accumulator. The nylon threads may loosen or stretch causing a leak. If it happens again, I'll try a thread sealent... Edclarke vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
